I was under the impression that it flowed that way because of elevation

What if we blew up a bunch of nukes underground in the upper Mississippi valley and dropped the elevation. That would do it huh?

Blow up the structures at old river control

If I knew this wouldn't be a complete disaster I would actually like to see what would happen.

Well at some points the red flows backwards when the Miss is really high.

Ports in BR and NO wouldn't be very useful when the Mississippi water elevations fell and the river silted in

So all water would be diverted down the atchafalaya?

Depends what you call drainage water. Water in the river is drainage water to me, so it flows out at:

Pass a Loutre
Southwest Pass

So much wrong with this thread. I thought it was a virus making me puke, but I think it's this and the Lake P to Freshwater conversion project thread causing it. Next time you guys are at the camp getting drunk and you let your minds wander, let it be for something worthwhile like ending world hunger, peace in ME, developing a republican mallard strain that will go the extra mile and migrate on the moon phase and not after all their feed is covered with snow and its too cold for the blue haired old ladies with a stale loaf of Bunny bread to go to the park and feed them.

where would it flow to if it reversed? you would have to drop the elevation all the way up the river to the great lakes or something for it to have a place to go.

When the ORCS blows out and sends most of the Mississippi down the Atchafalaya, your prayers will be answered.

If ORCS fails, most if not all bridges crossing Atch. are gone. Add 190 over Morganza and I 10, Morgan City bye-bye also. This assuming it happens during high water event. I was impressed it held up the way it did the last flood. I thought that was going to be the one that did it in.

I read an article last year that claimed this is not as big of a concern as many think. No idea how I'd find it now.

Walked out on it during the flood during an inspection. It was vibrating so bad you couldn't talk to each other. All the engineers were saying "well, we will see. It should hold. I think. Maybe. Yeah it's fine. Wow this is pretty rough. Never seen it this bad. We're ok. I don't know about this guys."

Looking back at it, I can't see that structure failing after that. 100 yr flood event (by definition).

This is something I can get behind.

They would just dredge it like they do now. Sand bars and whatnot are constantly stacking up in the river.

There would be less sediment anyway.
