Before you start shitty threads, do some research first. The only teachers who make 50K + are those who have been there for 15-20 years or been in school for 6-8 after their Bachelor degree. Teachers don't get paid for their off days either, twerp.

In my 4th year teaching in DFW. Make around 65k. Not in a union and I think teachers for the most part are overpaid. We dont generate any revenue for our organization and every teacher I know say it's a "calling". Teachers that complain about pay have always bothered me. Also, working with kids all day is infinity times better then dealing with jaded adults all day.
Lots of awful teachers all over the country. Im all in favor of teachers being paid based on perfomance but the unions are quick to squash that. I asked a fellow teacher today how they were and their response was "4 more days till the weekend". I hate those teachers and wish they quit yesterday

Let's not overlook the fact that teachers retire younger than almost all professions. They get 30 plus years of tax payer funded retirement.

My mother has been in education for over 20 years, and let me just reply to some of your points.
1. she doesn't get anywhere near $50k, albeit she is in private school, she DOES have better insurance than public schools
2. She works much longer than 8.5 months. You are forgetting the continuing education courses, grading papers and projects (depending on what grade she may teach).
3. Most people teach because they love to teach, not bc they get to retire at 50, consequently teachers don't want to retire bc of the love of the career.
4. Teachers who are involved in their students, schools, and communities RARELY work 8 hours. My mother, when involved with student council rented a hotel room next to school bc she was working 10-12 hours a day for weeks on end.
I think a lot of your argument is grounded in the minimum a teacher must do to maintain a job. There will be bottom feeders in every profession. Those who love what they do will never....EVER abide by what you say.

my wife doesn't have much free time at home. with all of the grades having to be entered online and shit, it takes her a very long time and she doesn't get paid for it.

My mother retired recetly from teaching 4th grade, 25+ years. She has a Master degree +30, I think in her last few years she broke into the low 40's. She is 59, retired at 57.

They do?
Most I know are making in the 40s, unless you're talking about a real veteran teacher (15+ years in teaching) hell, some who teach in smaller towns are making as little as 30k a year.

During that 1 hour "off" my wife is forced to lesson plan with her group or hold tutoring hours for any student who needs it.
30 minute lunch is not very long when you work out in a portable and have to walk to the main building to grab your lunch from the fridge. It's long enough, but don't act like it's a privilege.

Yet you're able to post on a message board while you're at work. I seriously doubt you're working 100% of the time. Planning is work for them, as lesson plans are required by administration.

I'm not saying it's harder than any other job. The summer is nice, but most jobs allow for much better pay, so it kind of balances out.
I think you don't know as much about teaching as you think you do. Again, not saying it's terribly difficult or isn't a great job, but it isn't the fricking glamour world you think it is.

Oh, not to mention the hours of training they make them go to.
My wife has had to work 5 eight hour saturdays this fall alone. Not the worst thing in the world, but that made for a 55+ hour week.
