I mean, I could decline it. But yes, I have it right now. And it's $25k.

I carry UM on a Jeep I barely drive. The decision is yours, but I won't go without it.

UM is pretty cheap. Got in a accident 3 years ago. So glad I had it. Other driver had none. Don't scrimp on this.

Does Alabama require any auto insurance?

Wrong! Health insurance does not pay for pain and suffering or lost wages. UMBI has NOTHING to do with property damage. Not even sure why property damage is coming into question here. ETA: I consider my self as close to an expert as I can legally claim to be on this subject. I deal with it everyday. Any more questions you guys need answered?

There is but one answer to the OP's question: immediately load up with as much UM coverage as you can afford. If you are hit by a drunk and uninsured driver, yes, your own company will cover the cost of your property damage, but that is all. If you have a serious injury, and the other driver is only carrying minimum coverage (in Alabama, $25,000) or has no insurance, this is the only coverage which will reimburse you for pain and suffering and lost wages which exceed the value of the other driver's coverage. In addition, it is relatively cheap. I represent many folks whose UM coverage is all they have and who come out of a wreck with permanently disabling injuries.

Uninsured also covers underinsured people who hit you (and they will hit you), so it's better to have it than not.

collision pays for damage caused to your vehicle in an accident.

You really need to step out of the thread. Collision is a physical damage coverage, which means that it is what covers THE VEHICLE, not the driver. UMBI is a liability coverage, which is what covers the driver. Hell, they're under separate lines on Page 14. You know what Page 14 is, don't you?

I carry the minimum umbi. It acts as a supplement to health insurance. Will pay deductibles, cosmetic surgery that some health ins wont pay, and some other things health ins won't pay (loss of wages etc).

I would suggest more than $25k. But, if that is what you have, then it is till 25k more than you would otherwise have
This. And if you are wise, you will max out on UIM coverage regardless of what your liability coverage limits are. I carry 100/300 ($100,000 max for any one person, $300,000 max per accident)on all my cars, and it is cheap. And for the guy who says he would not be interested in recovering for pain and suffering, wait until a really terrible wreck takes place and you and your family lose everything; I suggest that $100,000 might help avoid that. Most folks don't have great disability coverage.

Collision insurance covers vehicular damage to your own vehicle caused by an uninsured motorist.
It covers collision damage. Period.

Your health insurance covers your own medical injuries.
To an extent.

If you are a dirtbag and want to sue for pain and suffering, any cheesy personal injury attorney will help whether you have UMBI or not.
Your health insurance may not cover everything that occurs in you auto accident with an uninsured motorist. And as others have said, there may be other passengers in your car when you get hit. UMBI protects YOU from anything that happens to them. But what the frick do I know? I've only worked in various aspects of the insurance industry since the late 1990s. Hell, depending on who your carrier is, I may have helped set your rates.

Can someone confirm that this is true, even if you carry comp and collision on your policy?
If you have full coverage (ie, comp and collision), then the damage to your vehicle is covered. However, the damage to you and any passengers isn't covered unless you carry UM.

Insurers hate to write UM coverage despite there being laws on the books requiring all drivers to have liability insurance. In Alabama, insurers must write UIM coverage up to the limits of your liability coverage, but they encourage you to waive the UM benefit. Frankly, from the insured's point of view, that is being penny wise and pound foolish. Example: your daughter is paralyzed from the neck down after being involved in a wreck with an uninsured driver. Sure, your medical insurance is going to pay for most of her medical expenses, but it is not going to cover the cost of renovating her house to accommodate someone who has to get around in a wheelchair, or, worse, to pay for someone to sit with her if she cannot get around at all. Personally, I would be glad to have the $100,000 to help defray these costs, regardless of whether you believe that folks who claim pain and suffering damages are greedy.

Read Earnest T's posts. He's telling the truth. Insurers don't like to write it, but next to a health policy, it's the most important coverage a driver can have, that isn't mandatory(and nonwaivable). Honest. I deal with the consequences of a lack of proper coverage often, and they can be life-altering in a very, very bad way.
