Yes and Yes. You're asking 2 different questions. Your health insurance will cover your medical bills. They won't pay for anything else, including compensation for your injuries.

No, that's not what the poster means. You can always use health insurance.

Right. OK. That's why this is all so complicated is because the wording get's all fricked up But we already went through this. You're right. I admitted that UMBI would be my only recourse for 'pain and suffering' (to boil it all down...what else would I be compensated for anyway?). I can live with that...I think

Based on all the other coverages you claim to have, as well as being single with no dependents, then it might not be right for you actually.

In fairness, my screename is supposed to be a combination of my then-college days gameday drinks of choice, with Natty and Jim Beam It never translated well, but I was probably drunk at the time and I'm not changing it. But in answer to the question, I ask b/c your liability limits may be too low. If you own some property and have some financial assets to protect, then I would be concerned about only having $25k of insurance for someone to take. If you cause an accident that is worth big money, they will come after you personally if you've got stuff worth taking. You would file for bankruptcy of course and protect some of your things, but what a pain in the arse that will be for the rest of your life. Now, if you're a college kid with a worthless vehicle and who rents cheap apartments while living meager paycheck to paycheck, then your limits are fine. *Most people don't fall into the category of not having shit, but having a shitload of medical, workers comp, life, etc. insurance - so you would be a rare breed

No, you're right. I do have a 'big boy' job now, and the assets will be a comin', so I need to raise my limits. I just bought a new truck and switched insurance companies from State Farm to Geico. It's giving me a chance to look at my coverage and make sure I'm happy with what I got before I go along my happy way and just keep paying them for the rest of my life. Always smart to do a 'look in' and check your coverages and have this conversation. Because your situation changes with time

Exactly. I went back and read your previous response. No one would be coming after you personally. You've got some nice retirement, but those are exempt. And unless the vehicles are a couple of new Range Rovers paid for in cash, you're safe, especially with no house. Glad to see you thinking about raising that up and getting UM as you get more shite.

In my current excess case, my driver was drinking.

Correct. And as I indicated, if you're really not at fault, it will be no more headache for you as the driver, than if you had UM coverage (you will get sued if you have UM coverage -- the notion that it's protecting you from that, is silly). There are plenty of valid reasons for carrying UM coverage, depending upon your situation (many have been presented here) thinking it is some sort of great protection from what a passenger in your car may do to you is not really one of them.
Y.A Tittle, just really quick. It sounds like most everyone here is saying that it's fairly rare for someone to get sued by passengers for more than your liabilities and UMBI coverage (whether you're at fault or not). Is your experience otherwise? You hint at this above when you say UMBI is no protection from getting sued...you're of course correct in this. But is it protection from getting your assets stripped like NaturalBeam is getting at.

The thread that wouldn't die.
quote:
You lost me on that last part. I need clarification here. You're telling me that if an uninsured motorist hits me AND is at fault, my only source of recompense for bodily injuries is my UMBI...if I have it? Even with my health insurance, I couldn't use it? WTF No. The UM would be the only coverage supplemental to the health insurance and med pay, neither of which can address pain and suffering, lost wages, etc. Also to you and NaturalBeam, what assets do you typically look at for recovery? I have no house. I do have have a ~$100k 401k. A small Roth IRA. Small savings. Two vehicles. A dog. A couple guns. No other big assets. What then? They're going to strip my retirement? No. I think retirement would be exempt. So you're also saying that if you have insufficient coverage AND UMBI, they'll usually just stop there? No matter how low or high the UMBI coverage is? Have you see a case of them going after more after UMBI as well?
Usually, but there are exceptions. If the defendant is a drunk multimillionaire, well...I had a recent case where a young wageearner (drunk, killed a bicyclist) agreed to pay a significant sum in addition to his liability coverage and my guy's UM coverage, but that is unusual.
