what 'potential liabilities' are we talking here?
The thread has much discussion, but I'll give a few minutes of thought to this post...others may chime in.
quote:
Myself? Covered under my health insurance...will be exposed to risk of copays and deductibles there. A few thousand $'s in most cases?
Your taking the risk that you're noncovered health expenses are only a few grand. If you're injured in an accident severe enough to drain the negligent driver's coverage, the duration and expense presented by your situation can be much more. You're taking that risk
quote:
My passengers? Covered under my bodily injury liability coverage up to limits. Might be exposed to further if sued by passengers who are injured. Does UMBI kick in here?
UM will not satisfy your passengers claims against you if you are alleged to be at fault.Your liability coverage will cover you there.
quote:
Uninsured vehicle? Property damage liability kicks in up to limits.
Yep.
quote:
We already talked about my disability being generous enough to cover lost wages.
That's your belief. Disability benefits, as a source of support, are a helluva way to live. I know this from experience, but it's your risk.
quote:
the way I see it, the only risk exposure I have is being sued beyond my bodily injury coverage from my passengers and the other vehicle passengers/driver. Does UMBI cover me?
I don't agree with you. UMBI will not cover claims alleging you caused injury...your liability coverage will. You can raise those limits if you wish to protect futher against that risk. You have great comfort in your disability coverage. I hope you don't need it. And you show great confidence in the assumption your health insurance will do what you need it to do. I hope you don't need to find out. Good luck.

And, it took me forever to type that response because I was on the phone with a client who was hammered by an underinsured driver last year and I'm assisting him with a UM claim for the wages he lost whlie recovering from the wreck. He's in a helluva hole...lucky he had the insurance, though.

Why hasn't he been paid if the accident happened last year? Why does he need someone to "assist" him with the claim?

Get as much as you can. And increase your liability limits. What kind of assets do you own?

Chad504boy and Yellowfin have been trolling their Shiite all day long. I posted here early this morning, and they are still asking the same questions as if no one addressed them, or posing ridiculous hypotheticals, or deliberately misinterpreting the better poster's remarks. It is pretty cut and dried that carrying UM is a good idea. If you elect to face that risk without protection, that is certainly your choice. It is simply not a very wise choice.

Do you get a copy of all your passengers' Medical Ins card before putting the vehicle in drive?

trolling? My first post in this thread said opinions vary and because your opinion is different than mine that means I'm trolling I'm no expert on insurance but my agent is one and he advised me to decline the coverage, I haven't read anything in this thread that would change my mine.

Can somebody give cliffs? I thought if you had full coverage in LA you couldn't carry full coverage and this. At least that's what Progressive told me.

What limits of coverage did you agent advise you to get? *And the 2 posts above mine should clue you in that insurance companies don't like to write UM coverage. Bad for them, good for you.

Why do people continue to keep raising this silly red herring of anything having to do with the passengers? Do YOU outline the specifics of any and all coverage that may be available through your policy or policies to anyone who may be a passenger in your vehicle before they get in the car and go somewhere with you?

LOL at anyone thinking insurance companies are offering for sale to the public any product that is "bad for them."

I believe their margins are much smaller on UM than regular liability, but I'm not in the business so I do not know. State law requires them to offer it though, and even if you haven't paid for UM coverage, if your insurer doesn't produce a signed waiver, then they are still required to pay the UM policy limits as if you did have it. How much liability did your agent recommend you to carry?

correcto... so if you get away with no signing and not paying... consider yourself as having hit the accident lotto.
