what's apple and oranges about it? Bother are looking at potential financial benefit and being that it's one of the first questions asked, implies similar hierarchy. Flip the script, if a guy doesn't want to know you view of politics or other more macro issues.....do you think that he's really interested in anything more that the sex that comes with you liking him?

Usually ask when we are getting to know each other, but it doesn't matter either way. I'm the one who pays for our dates.

you are asking why people shouldn't ask about $$, vacation, and benefits of a job and comparing it to a political discussion on the first date. quote:
Bother are looking at potential financial benefit
One is immediate financial benefit with the possibility of long-term career the other is basically "are we splitting the check tonight?" I don't ask about a guy's finances unless were are much further along than our first date.

implies similar hierarchy.
I don't know what this means. I don't rank order my dates based on their political opinion or their income. I also don't choose a job based solely on the salary and benefits.
quote:
if a guy doesn't want to know you view of politics or other more macro issues
If he doesn't ask me on the first date, I don't care. If he isn't really that interested in those things in general, he probably doesn't care what I think either.

I would sincerely hope that my political leanings aren't the only thing that determine if someone is interested in me beyond sexually

But what are your political leanings on a macro level? Apparently I'm supposed to ask this question.

not at all, it's the same question, "is this job/person worth my time?"...when the hierarchy is money, it's a simple question to try to ascertain that value in the person's mind. If the same exact guy told 2 different women: 1. I'm a customer service associate at Best Buy 2. I'm a Surgeon would you expect the women to be unphased by either response? It's just information, her head's not spinning "I can't wait to tell my mother"?

Why the hell would you care about asking what someone does for a living? I'm terrible at conversing but even I don't give a frick about that kind of boring shite. I'll ask if a girl is in school, what she does in her spare time, what music she listens to, what line of work is she in, etc... As long as you don't ask specifically where she works or how much she makes right off of the bat, I don't think there'd be a problem..

"is this job/person worth my time?"
that's not what you asked. If that's what you wanted to know, that's how you should have presented it. Someone's job or political leanings do not determine whether they are worth my time or not.
quote:
If the same exact guy told 2 different women: 1. I'm a customer service associate at Best Buy 2. I'm a Surgeon
I would think if he's not sure whether he works at Best Buy or is a surgeon, he's got bigger issues. Neither of these answers in and of themselves would determine whether or not I would date a guy. And my mother has ZERO input on who I date.
