Even when the government spends money like it's grown on trees and we have to borrow like crazy? That's how we get this debt we have.

Or non-existant at the federal level.

On the other hand, I don't mind paying taxes I just want value for what I'm forced to pay. Preferably on the local level. I'd rather pay most of my taxes on a local level rather than a federal level (as it stands now).

This.

I'd be fine with tax rates if the state and fed percentages were flipped.

I can agree with that, so long as the local money is spent in ways that helps the nation as a whole.

I made 42,387 in 2011. I owed $723 in taxes. Not a ton, but it hurt.

You'll have much more influence on where the tax dollar gets spent a the local level especially when your representative lives down the street from you. If they live in DC, they usually blow you off.

What specifically about the planet do you worry about?

Planet and nation will be fine no matter what person, party or coalition we put in charge.

The people on it. No one is worth less than an American. All people need the opportunities and blessings we've had.

You need to pay more than your $723 to make that happen.

Most people live a relatively good life. We judge their existence by our standards too often.

re: 10% of a poor person's salary...

You do understand that taxes like sales taxes, property taxes and payroll taxes are regressive by their nature right? If you look at tax paid as a percentage of income I guarantee you I, with an annual salary of about 100,000, paid a significantly higher percentage of my income in taxes than most people earning more.

If regressive taxes are abolished then we can talk about changing the progressive income tax. Until then, I think it is more than fair.

Yeah but the point you're missing is that a 10% hit on a poor family might force them to skip a meal. Whereas a 10% hit on the rich might force them to down size from a 36' fishing boat to a 32'.

i understand the reasoning, but it is more "fair" as everyone likes to say

Would really like an explanation of how this is more fair with the existence of the regressive property, sales and fica taxes?

I agree, too. I'm talking about the truly destitute, not people in countries without access to cable and Burger King.

re: 10% of a poor person's salary...

Is that proportionally equivalent to 30-50% of a rich person's salary in terms of sacrifice?

As far as sacrifice is concerned, no. For poor people the final 10% of their salary isn't disposable... it is needed for essentials. The problem for the struggling middle class who vote Republican, they get ticked off when they see poor people spend their last 10% on luxury items like ice cream or the movies. They would have people living in mud huts before they felt they deserved a dime. They fail to understand that these people are real people and not just peasants.
