Thanks Demon, been looking at the tactical also, so this might help me decide.

No problem man. I have the regular 10/22 and I put a collapasable/folding ATI stock on it. It's a little heavier than the original stock but it's pretty cool. When it's folded up I could probably fit it into a hiking backpack but not a regular one.

Agreed. Great gun.

10/22 takedown is also a great rifle. You can split it right down the middle to fit in a pack.

This is why I was considering it. Have you had any bad issues with one?

My friend bought one this summer and it runs like a top. I think you're a little more limited on optics due to where it splits but I could be wrong.

But overall, it never fails.

I have a 25 year old Marlin 60. If I ever buy another .22 it will be a nice bolt action.

If you want a nice rifle to pass to your son someday, there are only a few to consider:

Automatics

The Browing takedown. A basic Grade I will probably run you around five hundred dollars

Levers

There are only two worth considering. One is the Browning BL 22. This is a really nicely done little rifle that is very light and handy. Its one fault is that it has one of the heaviest triggers you'll ever see until you get it broke in well.

The other is the Marlin 39. This is the Cadillac of lever action .22s. However, it is a full sized rifle and with the according length and weight. Once broken in, it is slicker than iced snot.

Bolt Action

The only one worth considering that is commonly available anymore is the CZ 452 and the variants thereof. It is very handy and accurate and feels like a rifle. A very nice rifle for practicing for your big game bolt.

There are a few others and some may quibble with this list. But I doubt that anyone would argue that if you got one of the guns on this list, you would be dissatisfied.

Marlin 39

I was wondering how this one wasn't mentioned already. I'd rather hunt with that than my 10-22 anyday. Very fine weapon. Pure joy to shoot.

How can you not include the henry? Having handled all three of these, the henry is probably the nicest. The marlin 39A's are very nice, but not nearly what they used to be.

Because they have a pot metal receiver and lots and lots and lots of plastic in the internal parts. The receiver isn't even blued, it is painted. And they wear out MUCH MUCH faster than the Browning or the Marlin.

They've been making the Marlins for a hundred years. You don't need to buy a new one. You can buy one made 40 years ago that is better than anything you can buy today.

And none of that is to say that the Henry isn't a nice little rifle. All I'm saying is that it is an heirloom rifle. If used heavily, it won't last long enough to pass on to a son and just isn't in the same class as the others.

I should have been clearer. I was refering to the golden boy which isn't made to be affordable like the standard henry.

I'm a huge marlin fan and the older 39A's are incredibly nice. The new ones just don't have the same feel as the pre-safety models.

The only browning I've shot was very nice.

It's almost a crime to buy something other than a lever action .22 for an heirloom IMO

Browning semi-auto .22

I have one and it is a sweet little rifle. It takes down quickly into two pieces and it holds the shells in a tube magazine in the stock. It also bottom ejects which i like. Fit and finish will be superior to most everything else out there.

I think I am going lever. That way it will make him think about his shots but allow him to get off more than one. That being said it will probably be the Henry. One of my sons is named Henry so that will add to it for him. Thanks for the information and opinions.

I like it because it teaches them about exposed hammers and shite.

Get the golden boy. It's a much better rifle than the standard Henry.
