They are now legal to use in Louisiana Teague. Not just for handicapable people anymore.

They work like a bow but provide a shooting platform similar to a rifle. They were created a long arse time ago by some body in Asia I think.

My dad has a messed up arm and has always wanted to bow hunt so we bought him one. All I know is I was expecting them to cost more. I was thinking comparable to a bow but we got what's supposedly a good one with a scope and arrows for under 700.

Ps don't tell him. It's for christmas, birthday, fathers day, and whatever else there is from me and my parents daughter for the next several years

I had a compound crossbow one time. My fondest memory was it leaving my hands...selling the damn thing to someone else.

The bolts (arrows) are expensive they disappear into grass never to be seen again. Will pass right through a foam archery target. Seldom got more than 2 or 3 shots from a single bolt before it went M.I.A..

Just frustrated the shite out of me.

Also, they're tough to walk through thick woods/brush...much more difficult than a bow.

Hated it. Today's modern compound bows are the way to go.

I know it may be frowned upon here, but I do. I have a Viper PSE Rattler. Dad bought it for me the year it was legalized in TN when I was too young to pull back a compound but in present time I still use it.

As far as the kill goes. Very efficient. Haven't had a deer run more than 30 yds with it. I've shot one completely quartered away and it still went all the way through tearing up the whole deer inside. Only thing I don't like about it is that it can be awkward to carry around sometimes. I recommend a 3-dot scope. Not terribly expensive either. And avoid styrofoam targets, the bolts will go through and if they don't it will still damage your feathers.

I buy expandable broadheads and double rubber band them. Reason why is because it shoots so fast I've had an expandable open up before it got to the deer and made my bolt fly wildly and completely miss.

Oh, and KEEP YOUR FINGERS BELOW THE PATH OF THE DRAW STRINGS, you can literally lose a finger or two if not careful.

Once I get a wall hanger with mine I'm switching back to compound for the pure sport of it. Good luck.

ETA: I recommend carbon bolts if you can find them, they're just stronger than aluminum but aluminum does just fine. I can put my bottom dot on its back and nail one at 60 yards.

I have both a regular bow and a crossbow. I've killed several deer with each. I'd rather shoot them with my bow than the crossbow but it has its advantages.
