just saw they were ranked #2 in the country by USA Today....went to pelican preps and saw they are literally full of D1 players. They are allowing 3.9/ppg on defense this season while having played 3 5A schools one being a highly ranked team from Florida.

how does JT do it year in and year out?

I know everyone will say it's just recruiting but is it really?

1. recruiting is main reason
2. workout/practice about 1/2 the schoolday.

Good buddy of mine went there and his schedule from around noon on was lunch, PE, and free period (and so was the entire team). Basically they had 3 hours of the school day, plus couple hours after school dedicated to f'ball and working out.

that's just not true. But everyone had PE or activity period as their last "class" of the day so they probably just had lifting and shite during that period till after school practice. And probably had shite to do before the school day as well.

But to answer the OP: its a combination of recruiting and playing the same basic schemes from like 3rd grade on.

And they are ranked #1 by Rivals

They don't recruit anymore. Parents want their kids to go there now.
They're coaching is second to none, as well. This never gets mentioned, but they've won without superior talent too.
Running the same system from 4th grade on up eliminates mental mistakes. Each kid knows their assignments like the back of their hand by the time they step on the Varsity field.
Quintessential HS Program.

I have heard of the Free Period = football practice thing, but I find it hard to believe that they have like 3 regular classes a day.

It's definitely a combination of recruiting & being in the same scheme from pee wee fball till HS. The scheme is like a second nature once they get to varsity.

Corey is not out there like he used to be. They're getting kids from much further away than they used to, Hahnville, LaPlace, Westbank, etc. Corey was always JPRD and Kenner, but parents have been seeking him out more than the other way around for a long time.

They can't afford to have done that. Those kids would end up at any number of other schools if Curtis wasn't actively on them. Not saying they don't get any kids whose parents just want them to go to Curtis, but they aren't all like that.

I'm sure he still maintains a presence, also have Curtis people Coaching on the Playgrounds. I remember at one time almost all of the Kenner Rec Playground Supervisor's kids went to Curtis. I would bet a few of the younger Coaches on staff are visible at the Playgrounds, too.

The reason they have more talent than ever is because they've never had this many African American kids before. Many of them come from outside Jeff Parish because they like to win and think Curtis gives them the best shot to get to College. Perrilloux went there because his older brother wanted him there, not because Corey was recruiting in Reserve. Believe it or not, Corey coaching Biddy Basketball All Stars for Kenner used to get a lot of kids wanting to go there, both from Kenner and other areas.

Coach Corey had some not so nice things to say about RP the last time I talked to him (which has been entirely too long)

I would add to what everybody else is saying that Jefferson Parish public school athletics are for shyte.

I'll put it like this: I don't think Texas lacks private school powers like Curtis because they don't let the privates in the UIL (except for the two Jesuits). They lack private powers because Texas public schools invest much into athletics, so there's no need for most parents to waste their time and money with a private school.

Why spend money on a John Curtis when you can go to programs like Southlake Carroll, Euless Trinity, Highland Park, etc., that really do it right. You can't find a school in JP that has its system down like Curtis, but you can probably find a dozen or so public school teams in the DFW area that have programs similar to Curtis, in terms of organization, support, etc. Now, none will be exactly like Curtis, because the hierarchy at Curtis is so unique, but they'll have tons of coaches, strong JV and freshmen programs, great facilities, continuity with their junior highs, etc., etc., etc.

Where you have that in Louisiana -- Monroe, Lake Charles, Lafayette -- you don't have the private schools dominating. For example, a great athlete doesn't have to try to get a scholarship to St. Thomas More, he can just "find" his way to Acadiana or Lafayette High if he's a baseball plaeyr. Where you've traditionally had shitty public school sports -- Shreveport, Baton Rouge and New Orleans -- you've had a "gap" filled by private school powers like Curtis and Evangel.

That's a huge part of it. If Jefferson Parish public schools (particularly on the East Bank side) placed the right emphasis in athletics, particularly in the 70s and 80s when Curtis was building itself up, then Curtis never would have become what it is.
