re: Extraterrestrials are discovered, how do you think the world reacts

quote:

Honestly lets start simple with single celled organisms on Mars. If this were discovered on Mars, how do you think people would handle it? Would the Anti-Evolution people deny they exist? Would there be mass protest with doomsday scenarios? Would we advance or descend in chaos? What if they contacted us and the population knew? How would we handle this mentally and politically?

I predict that Atheists will end up being to be very upset when, inpite of the strawman argument that they put forth, the discovery does not immediately disprove the existence of God to those who believe.

Case in point.

I still think an advanced race of extraterrestrials finding Earth is a bad thing...There are not a lot of planets out there with our resources or atmosphere. If a person doesn't think "visitors" are an issue, they believe in a much kinder world than the one I have experienced.

Will Smith, Bill Pulmer, and Jeff Goldblum are still alive. No worries.

Anyone with half a brain can use multiple philosophical arguments for the existence of God. Finding life on another planet actually works right into a few of the arguments made by philosophers throughout time. Who in their right mind doesn't think that there is or was life somewhere in the universe. The shear number of galaxies, stars, planets, etc.... seem to leave one to draw no other opinion. To think there are more galaxies then grains of sands on earth, and each galaxie had billions ofstars. How can there not be or ever was life?

Any ET life that would visit earth would have to be able to either travel faster than the speed of light, or warp the time-space continuum, neither one of those has proven to be achievable - and there is no guarantee that they are at any technological level - making the encounter extremely unlikely - no matter how many intelligent ETs are out there.

PLUS, you gotta figure any ET that CAN travel between star systems wouldn't be stupid enough interfere with our retarded advancement - ask Spock. They're not going to contact us until we stop shitting all over everything we do.

It does, however, stick a fork in the fundamentalist 6000 year earth thesis. There are more people out there who believe in this than you might think, including a lot who are educated and ought to know better. There's going to be a lot of cognitive dissonance among that group.

No it doesn't. Bible literalists don't believe in God, they believe in the Bible. Bible Idolatry is their religion, they just won't admit it to themselves, so new conflicting facts won't change anything for them.

You seem to want to ignore 2000 years of history.

Have you ever seen some of the titles listed in the Index Librorum Prohibitorum?

quote:

The Index included a number of authors and intellectuals whose works are widely read today in most leading universities and are now considered as the foundations of science, e.g. Kepler's New Astronomy, his Epitome of Copernican Astronomy, and his World Harmony were quickly placed on the Index after their publication.[56] Other noteworthy intellectuals and religious figures on the Index include Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, Voltaire, Denis Diderot, Victor Hugo, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, André Gide, Immanuel Kant, David Hume, René Descartes, Francis Bacon, John Milton, John Locke, Galileo Galilei, Blaise Pascal, Hugo Grotius and Saint Faustina Kowalska. Charles Darwin's works were notably never included,[57] although a number of works that reconciled evolutionary theory and Catholic theology in ways unacceptable to the Church were included. These have recently been described as works ".. considered as the foundations of science and literature."[citation needed]

In many cases, an author's oeuvre ("opera omnia" - all his works) were forbidden. Most of these were inserted in the Index at a time when the Index itself stated that the prohibition of someone's "opera omnia" (all his works) did not cover works whose contents did not concern religion and were not forbidden by the general rules of the Index, but this explanation was omitted in the 1929 edition, an omission that was officially interpreted in 1940 as meaning that thenceforth "opera omnia" covered all the author's works without exception.[58]

The Index wasn't abolished until NINETEEN SIXTY-SIX!

Does it? So someone can believe that God created the earth, and all life on earth, in 6 days 6000 years ago but simply can't continue to believe that God created the entire universe, and all life within it, 6000 years ago?

That makes no sense.

quote:

What? I'm not a literalist but that is absurd of you to say.

The bible never said the earth was 6000ish years old, in the lineage part it merely lists off the begats...

Thus man interprets what it will

Meanwhile dudes are living 700 years. (Lunar cycles, btw)
