re: Some tough truths for "social conservatives" to swallow

We need to make the distinction between Social Conservatives and POLITICAL Social Conservatives. I believe abortion, gay marriage, drugs, sex outside of marriage, saggy jeans and earrings on dudes are wrong, but I don't want the Federal Government to involve itself. And when I want the Federal Government out, I don't want it to mandate their legality.

Laws regarding social issues should be decided at the State and local level. If a town in Alabama wants to outlaw saggy jeans, fine. If Vermont wants to legalize gay marriage, I'm fine with that too.

Since I've been in banland forever for taking part in religious threads, I find the need to ask...are they ok now, or are they ok provided you are on Team Jesus?

I'd hate to get rebanned already...

How so? He stated the truth. Once gay marriage becomes the law of the land those religious organizations that cannot in good conscience support it will be targeted for persecution.

If that is not true, then please tell me what will happen to those whose religious beliefs cannot support this.
I disagree. I go to Church and my Church doesn't marry the gays. And I fully support their decision to refuse to do so, even though I personally support gay marriage.

Gays are not a protected class, and I've not been convinced that the activists in their group will have any power to force Church's hands. We still have that great little thing known as the 1st Amendment ya know.

Right

But there are some people that act like the whole country is going down the drain because of a handful of states legalizing gay marriage

Hate to tell them but that trend is going to continue

I would guess by 2024 the number of states without gay marriage will be in the minority

Schools and their PC mentality are very liberalizing. Colleges are even more so. The longer you are out of the "education" system and the more time you have to actually "form" you own beliefs, and not go by what you are told to think, the more people become conservative in their thinking.

There will be no economy if there is no nation.

What is prosperity absent a moral people? Check out what rhe founders have to say on this topic.

Government control of churches through taxation and healthcare mandates = violation of First Amendment.

The way to destroy a society is by collapsing it at ita most basic unit. 70% bastard birth rate. 50% divorce rate. Women in children unmarried and divorced far more likely to live in poverty. We have more people in prison than any nation on earth. Louisiana has more people in prison per capita than any state in the union. Are our streets safe?

The goal is total ascendancy of the State. Total diminishing of our Constitution, our freedoms, our God, and our rights.

Take out God and where do our rights come from?

We won the Cold War and yet we are adopting the very unsistainable policies that caused the Societ Union to commit suicide.

Well I went to Catholic school all my life and I'm now a young 30s gainfully employed professional.

I have no interest in denying gay people the right to marry

I agree. But unless you can show me how legalizing gay marriage has any effect on this, outside of your bogeyman claims, then I'm not particularly worried about it.

From a fiscal standpoint, I agree. Not from a social standpoint, as Powerman pointed out in the OP. This is really just a cliche argument.

And I pray you are right. But I see a rising hatred against those who cannot in good conscience support gay marriage, specifically those that cite religious reasons.

Very thankful for this amendment to our Constitution. Praying it continues to be enforced.

Seriously...can I say something here or what? Can he simply ASSERT that a god exists and ask this question, or do I have the right to ask him to prove his assertion?

This is the inherent unfairness of this policy on this board. There is clearly no interest in banning the topic entirely, and yet because nearly every admin agrees in one way or another with this guy the only opinions that get highlighted are the ones which challenge it.

I've believing in personal liberties is liberal then call me Michael Moore.

I would hope that as people age they become less idealistic and recognize that "absolutes" are a fallacy. Even in science there are few laws, only theory's that are patiently waiting to be disproven.

And it's probably not really a great idea to keep promoting the idea that as you stop your formal education you are more likely to be conservative.

It's almost as if there is some admission that conservatism is inversely correlated with learning.

so you dont want to the govt coming down to churches to tell them how to preach, but you think it's not only ok, but a RIGHT, for churches to tell the govt how to govern?

sounds fair

It seems like the vast majority of folks only want to use the 1st Amendment as either a sword or a shield, but few recognize that it's designed to be used as both - which is why it's so great.
