Let a youngster kill one off the water for his first duck

My dad made me wait until I could shoot a duck in the air before I bagged my first one. He also waited for a good duck, in my case a pintail drake, before allowing me to take a shot. I didn't understand it then but I do now. That youngster was probably fired up about his first kill and rightfully so but that's something you never forget and if I'm doing the shot calling a first duck will never be a spoony on the water.

There's plenty of other ducks I'd rather shoot, but if I didn't have that opportunity, I guess I'd take some spoonies. The fact that they're a PITA to clean is more motivation to pass than the way they taste...

Some spoonies will get into the saltwater marshes and eat there. If they do the meat will be reddish and taste like fish. Otherwise the meat is white and just like another duck. BTW I let them go.Rice field or marsh.
