There have been 165 episodes. An average episode is right around 22 minutes, so that would mean that they have been to this story for 60 hours and 30 minutes (and still counting).
Ted has talked to his kids for two and a half days straight.
Even if you cut it down to five minutes to tell the story of each episode, that's still close to 14 hours. Assuming he's spreading the days out to tell the story, the kids would have to be listening to him for two weeks straight with an hour of talking each day. It's completely ridiculous. And I couldn't agree more with kmcmah1 and Fletch. Ted's censoring certain parts of the story for his kids yet he doesn't seem to mind telling his kids about all of his friends (and Ted's) sexual history i.e. Barney's list of 200+ sex partners. It's another part of the story that doesn't make any sense.

Of course it's "ridiculous" to do it over the course of 2 weeks, it could easily be something that he has done every day after school for an entire semester for 15 minutes a day, or one day a week for an hour.
