This has been my question all along. Does the preexisting condition mandate include any protection for the insurance company? Why wouldn't I wait until I have cancer and need years of surgery and therapy to upgrade my insurance?

im actually investigating this currently and dont have a great answer off the top of my head given its a pretty niche concern anyway, my gut tells me that its somehow connected to the tax collected if you had refused to buy health insurance that sum is almost equal to the cost of health insurance, so there will be that pool of money

A company that provides healthcare would likely receive MORE remuneration from Obamacare... so until we know more details I'll have to conclude his assertion of "more costs" is pure bunk.
Do you know what a medical device is? Do you know what an excise tax is? There is part of the added cost.

But say I am in compliance and I own some kind of minimal policy (the cheapest they will let me have). Now I get in an accident and have multiple fractures and a spinal injury. In the next few years I will need multiple surgeries, and extensive rehab, and nursing care for life. Is the insurance company required to sell me a more comprehensive policy at a govt controlled price (the same an uninjured person would pay?) If so, that seems like the end of the for-profit insurance industry. Why would anyone buy it?

Coondaddy, Medicare has been around since 1965(close) and 47 years later you suddenly have a problem with renumeration. When it passed all the MD's predicted disaster, doctor shortage etc. Didn't happen.

Of course. There are no pre-existing limitations.

tdt Conversely I could tell you that Obamacare is reducing costs by demanding lower administrative costs from healthcare providers.
And of course because the government demands something, it is certain to becomes a reality... I have been in business for over 35 years and I can tell you emphatically that there has never in my experience been 1 SINGLE THING the government has gotten involved with and/or regulated or mandated where the costs associated with that "thing" has gone down... NEVER...

Aren't most cheap health insurance plans designed to cover major issues and surgeries and the expensive ones cover that plus things like physician services, prescription drugs, etc)

Wait, you think that tax money is actually going to health care instead of into the general fund?

well the goods news is that if they fail the insurance company has to send you a check so your costs are going down regardless

I too work in health care, and business is booming. They can't hire enough nurses here because there aren't enough out there.

No. The penalty is less in almost every case. For someone like me... who can afford a high deductible plan, that's going to be outlawed... I'll simply pay the FINE and get insurance only if something catastropic happens. It's a) cheaper than what I'm paying now and I'll bank the difference to cover routine expenses and b) it's cheaper than buying insurance. The sad part is the most responsible option for myself, completly contradicts the mission of the personal mandate. Going to find another way to mooch. This one isn't going to work.

Exactly. Clearly no one can afford healthcare...

Then I dont see how the ins cos will not all go bankrupt? How can there be any such thing as private insurance when they cant charge what they need to to stay in business and make a profit?
