The "upper and middle class" don't see them or interact with them regularly. As opposed to LA, San Fran, Boston, NYC etc

why did Obama get a pass, nationally, on failing to rescind the Patriot act AND supporting the NDAA?

That wasn't about social freedoms, it was about religious bigotry and intolerance from people on the right.
Newt Gingrich even equated Islam with Nazism.
And here's how Colin Powell addressed the issue of Islamophobia on Meet The Press four years ago.
