why in the holy fricking hell do we need a moon base?
Drill for raw materials, make it the lift point of our space program to the outside worlds, and increase our knowledge in the universe. A moon base should be one of the top priorities right now. If you went back to 1969 and you told them that we did not yet have a moon base, they would be unbelievably pissed at us.

Its much cheaper than a ton of bull shite that America wastes money on. A fully operational moon base could be built for a mere 20 billion dollars. We go that much more in debt every other month. How about we stop a bull shite war and cut our defense budget in half?

I'm sorry, but every fricking generation from now til the end of time can put forth this bull shite argument. Yeah, its going to take around 40 years for this to pay off, and that's probably not going to change. Yeah, we're looking at a very long term investment rather than something you'll be able to see by the turn of the next election. Here's the problem though: It's a race to get to the Moon and secure its resources. If we don't get there first, the Chinese will and secure the Moon more or less. In order to maintain itself as the worldest greatest country, America has to get there and stay there first. We need to be the ones that are the innovators, because that's one thing America is much better than pretty much any of the other powers in the world. We are the creators, and in order to do that we need to boldly go first where no country has gone before.

We need practical, real world spending cuts. Massive government worker layoffs. Do you have any idea how many useless government positions are available for people who suck too much to make it in the private sector? I have had relatives and friends in many levels of state and a few in federal positions who have expressed the overabundance of useless people in their (and others') government offices. I know I can't be the only person to have heard this. We need to cut before we can grow. It's like a fruit tree; you cut the branches that do not produce fruit so that the others can thrive. Root out that which is fruitless, so that the fruitful might survive and multiply. I am by no means a political junkie or someone who knows exactly what it takes to make things right. I do know that if I was having trouble paying my bills, and owed money all over town, the first thing I would do is cut my needless spending. I would not wipe out my savings to order a "work from home" kit from late night TV. Eating out for dinner, movies, drinking, bars, junk food, hobbies: cut them all. Then I'd look at the situation.
None of this has anything to do with a space base on the Moon. What is your point with this?

That has hundreds of trillions of dollars of raw materials, not to mention will be used as the lift off point to mine asteroids, comets, and then get us to Mars. But hey, no problem spending 20xs this amount of money to bomb the ever loving shite out of brown people. Bomb, Baby, Bomb!

slightly off-topic, what what exactly are these trillions of dollars of raw materials on the moon? it's not just worthless stone? (sorry, I'm not exactly an astral geologist)

Pretty much any raw material that is on the Earth that is not the result of life (like oil) can be found on the Moon. The biggest raw material that we would be after though is Helium 3. There's only 30 pounds of it on Earth and its the best conductor known to man. If it could be refined, it would likely replace oil. The Moon and the Earth are mostly made of the same thing, its just the Moon has developed resources that a planet with an atmosphere wouldn't have in abundance.

isn't this our government's fault? yup so are they going to frick up the distribution of helium again?

I assure you that they're certainly not putting this type of helium in balloons. The shite is worth as much as mithril. Per pound, it is worth more than any substance on the planet.

we have a shortage b/c of forced sales by the government that weren't subject to market forces, though

Yeah, you're right, but this type of Helium is an incredibly conductor of energy. Just to put it in perspective, a mere 25 tons of it could power every single Americans home and car, and there are millions of tons of it on the Moon.

Americans need something to get behind, as well. If we look upward, beyond our atmosphere, we might just stop killing each other?

i don't disagree that it's important or valuable. i just don't trust the government to make it economically viable

3He is not really a conductor, it is to be used for fusion-type power plants, which don't exist yet. Maybe getting it back down on earth would spur the development of this technology. And hey, it's lighter than fricking moon rocks.

Wrong. Try again. Nasa made it famous, but they didnt invent it. I'm totally for this. The process we go thru in getting there will be far greater than the feat of actually going. Technology, innovation, and ingenuity are priceless.
