from the link NASA officials think they can pull off such manned missions without busting their budget, which stands at $17.7 billion in the proposed 2013 federal budget. "They're not talking about plans that imply significant budget increases," Logsdon said. "It gives a more focused use for SLS and Orion before an asteroid mission."

The base likely would also be extremely expensive.
I am glad they included this in the article...I thought it would be really cheap.

Where is Rex and DA to complain and bitch about this and the wasting of tax $$$? I personally am happy they are doing something like this, we need to do more in space. But I very much believe that if ANY Republican proposed this, ALL Democrats would be screaming their asses off.

A quote from one of my favorite books.
quote:
People should be allowed to have as many children as they like, and the surplus population should be sent to other worlds, to spread mankind so far across the galaxy that no disaster, no invasion could ever threaten the human race with annihilation.

Right The people here have gone completely insane Waste trillions on wars bombing brown people? No problem. Advance space exploration for a fraction of the cost? No way. We need to put our foot down on spending! And of course these are the same people that were all over Obama for cutting spending to NASA in the first place. Seriously, you just can't win with hacks.

While this is exciting news this won't be happening for a long, long time. NASA is hoping they can do this with their current budget. If that's the case then it could be 20 years or more before we actually see a return trip to the Moon.

AND for instructing the NASA mgt to spend their time (and money) to make the Muslim world feel good about themselves. Is the new NASA plan to include all those scientific Muslim contributors that were generated by this outreach? Or is it just a cover to share the wealth with them. After all, it's only fair for the richest(country )among us, to give a little extra to those in need.

Do you know how much money is to be made mining asteroids, comets, and even the moon for raw materials? Its unbelievable and already in the works. Companies are already hiring interns to work on the mining projects with projections to starting mining within 10 years.

We have spent $800 billion on the Iraq war and over $500 billion in Afghanistan. I would rather spend that on a moon base and NASA than an unnecessary war in Iraq. It costs much less lives as well. It alsways surprises me how conservatives dont mind spending trillions of tax payers' money on war and death and keeping a large Army (big government). But God forbid, spend money on research and development, NASA, education, and providing healthcare for own people.

Just saw this on the highlight posts below, and I'm just going to say I'm excited and hope its true. People thought Newt was out of his mind, but he was spot on in wanting to put man back on the Moon. We need to have a Moon settlement before even thinking about going to Mars.

Because its our future, and this is well worth the investment. I'd just take about 10 billion out of the defense budget to make it happen. Its not nearly as expensive as that worthless war we're doing out in the Middle East right now.
