Actually, the innovations and products developed as a result of this could create several million jobs, not to mention open up research opportunities, so, YES it's exactly what we need.

Here is a good article that gives both sides of the argument. I was mainly citing logic in that, since the population hadnt reached 1 billion until 1830 and it is 7 billion now, eventually there will be no more room(but probably resources will run out sooner) for continuing population growth.
It is so logical to look to a place where man cannot live without technology yet at the same time we are incapable of technologically sustaining population on the planet where we actually live.

Is that a question or a statement? Either way, well done.

I grew up in Huntsville, AL and know exactly how dependent that economy is on NASA and defense. However, considering how grave our fiscal condition is right now...HOW ARE WE GOING TO PAY FOR IT???

We don't need no stickin oil! We're going to direct the moonbeams to go along with the unicorn farts. Actually, I don't know if this is the right way or not, but funding NASA is a good thing if someone makes sure they don't go after bat shite crazy projects.

Impossible. If I've learned anything from this board, it's that secrets cannot be kept.

Where have I heard this before?
quote:
"Our third goal," Bush said, "is to return to the moon by 2020, as the launching point for missions beyond."
quote:
"with the goal of living and working there for increasingly extended periods of time."
I also remember the lefties saying it wasn't necessary. Now it's awesome. When are we going to realize that neither D's or R's are in charge of our military or foreign policies. The president just goes along for the ride. LINK

Obviously the elite has discovered that there is a fortune to be made in it. The goal now is to convince the sheople to back/fund it. Did you folks learn nothing from 9/11? (rhetorical question)

What leads from it has the potential to pay off the initial investment many times over in the long run. The debt looks huge because of our lack of revenue. We're not paying it off cutting our way out. Instead, we grow our way out of the problem. This is a small step in the right direction for once.

Actually
Any reply that people give that starts with that word is always, 100% of the time, condescending bull shite that has no real practical application. Actually, you need to go frick yourself. We do not need to spend billions of dollars on the moon RIGHT NOW. The way you describe it is a "hair brained get rich quick" scheme. We need practical, real world spending cuts. Massive government worker layoffs. Do you have any idea how many useless government positions are available for people who suck too much to make it in the private sector? I have had relatives and friends in many levels of state and a few in federal positions who have expressed the overabundance of useless people in their (and others') government offices. I know I can't be the only person to have heard this. We need to cut before we can grow. It's like a fruit tree; you cut the branches that do not produce fruit so that the others can thrive. Root out that which is fruitless, so that the fruitful might survive and multiply. I am by no means a political junkie or someone who knows exactly what it takes to make things right. I do know that if I was having trouble paying my bills, and owed money all over town, the first thing I would do is cut my needless spending. I would not wipe out my savings to order a "work from home" kit from late night TV. Eating out for dinner, movies, drinking, bars, junk food, hobbies: cut them all. Then I'd look at the situation. Also, come up with a budget that keeps you on track to paying back the sharks.

COULD? We're spending billions of dollars on the hope that something COULD come out of it? And if it doesn't we can still to continue to say "oh well at least we tried" just like that failed 700 billion in stimulus.... We need solutions for our economy, HOPE is what got us to 16trillion

If we're not going to try to things like this. why bother having NASA at all? Besides, colonizing the moon will allow us to get rid of liberals and return to our roots. I say go for it.

The United Nations will not be happy. They will want us to share the wealth with all those Muslim countries who have made invaluable contributions to space exploration. And how can Obama refuse them since he is the one who acknowledged their contributions?
