Last year after Irene, union utility workers slashed the tires on southern non-union utility trucks. Those guys didn't want the help. Unions gonna union

After Katrina, Entergy had to segregate crews that were Union from the Non-Union crews...

I know some people in utilities and I know a lot of people in the local fire department. I'll try to find out more. FWIW, I wouldn't rush to judgment. If it's true that they were turned away for contract status, what a f*ing joke! I'd bet there's more to the story, however, assuming the premise is accurate in the first place.

I bet this is a lower end management saying this. I have heard stories like this from my guys in the field who have traveled to work in other states. My guys are union. I have heard firsthand stories of someone pulling into the local to get a work order and come out to see all four of his tires slashed because he drove a Toyota truck. Some told me that they still do lead joint cast iron pipe in areas because the mechanical couplings cut time and the union fought it. Some wont use PVC pipe for the same reasons. North east, Vegas, Chicago are some o the strongest union bastions left.

To Hell with those people then - let them rise up and put down the Democrats and their Marxist crap - until then suffer.

IIRC after the 1989 Bay Area earthquake, State and Fed suspended union only requirements to get Cali back on track (basically a state of emergency). Saved them a shite ton of koney and the rebuild was much quicker.

not true. When Hurricane Katrina struck, there were many, many contracts that were shite canned in order to get things done. Almost all contracts have a force majeure clause.

you don't know what the company got in return for a contract provision that says, 'in the event of an emergency where more help is needed, employer agrees to hire only union workers, no matter where from."
In other words, fack the welfare of the people suffering... this is solely about the union.

You would think that crews with experience in recovery from these types of disasters would be welcomed. Hmmm

HUNTSVILLE, Alabama -- Two area utility systems - Huntsville Utilities and Joe Wheeler Cooperative - mentioned in media reports claiming their crews were not allowed to help with storm aid in New Jersey because they were non-union said this morning the story is untrue. The general manager of the other department mentioned, Decatur Utilities, has been unavailable for comment this morning. One of its crew members was quoted in the initial reports. Bill Yell, spokesman for Huntsville Utilities, said nine of his employees are currently helping with recovery from Hurricane Sandy and had no union-related issues. "That's a rumor," he said. "We are starting work this morning with Long Island Power Authority. We were headed to a New Jersey utility but they had all the crews they could handle." A spokeswoman for Joe Wheeler Electrical Membership Cooperative. said the crews from Trinity also are assisting with storm recovery and, in fact, are unionized. "It is not true for us," she said. "I don't know how we got lumped in there (in that report). We sent eight guys to Maryland, not New Jersey. They have been there since before the storm but they've finished work and are headed home this morning." The crews from Joe Wheeler EMC went to Denton, Md., in anticipation of the storm and worked with Choptank Electrical Cooperative.

I have pumped my own gas 100% of the time in New Jersey (at Joint Base McGuire/Dix/Lakehurst - "Oh, the humanity!"). The state is incomprehensible, the jug handle "go right to turn left" turns, the non-connected road system, "Snooki" (whatever that is), just baffle me.

yeah, contracts suck.
You don't think these union requirements in contracts should be waived in times of emergency? Seriously? It's not like they're making this up to screw the union.

No. "Worthless" would be not doing anything. These slobs are impeding work. They are impeding work while citizens in their state are dealing with near freezing conditions without heat. Honestly they should be in a damp unheated jail cell for a couple of days.

Union bosses don't want that help so they can protect their profitable sinecure? They can freeze in the dark then.

Thanks for the update, but could you provide a link? For all the people saying us Northerners can 'freeze' and whatnot - because non-union workers supposedly weren't allowed to work, based on a three paragraph blurb - VERY Christian of all of you. Once this story is properly refuted, and I'm sure it will be, you can reconsider your reactionary posts. Hoping people go cold because of this? Even if it were TRUE, which it's not? Really...?
