The word "overtime" comes to mind.

re: Alabama Utility Crews Turned Away in NJ for Sandy Help

dude, that's not blaming them. That's saying that the employer might not be too concerned about it, because what they might have gained may be worth it in the grand scheme of things. This is just one storm, and the employer has to deal with these workers year in and year out.

Sure the customers may lose out, but we are talking about the power company here.

exactly.

this entire discussion assumes that there's no limit to how many crews can be working and helping the situation.

I don't know anything about post-storm light-fixing, but again, there may be more tot his than meets the eye.

I think we may be talking about the union and overtime for their workers here.

Yeah, I get the contract portion of this. That's fair.

It's when it's all said and done, and they have to explain to their customers that they turned away help because they were non-union...I don't know how that's gonna go over.

Then again, people usually don't have have much choice when it comes to their utility company. Maybe it's different in NJ though.

And this is how Democrats would have the rest of the country act. Swell.

Because Katrina was handled completely differently under the Bush Administration.

The partisan hackery on this board...Priceless.

Unions have their place and their moments (see Saints bountygate and NFLPA).

NJ isn't one of them right now.

why does everybody take so seriously the words Obama uses? He tries to say everything and nothing at the same time.

Plus, undoubtedly he was talking about the federal aspect of things, which is not implicated here.

Seriously? You think that's a concession the employers made willingly?

Unions come to the table with thugery and pretty much nothing else.

do any of you realize that these union workers have employers who apparently bargained away the right to allow non-union workers to pitch in?

Wow. Just a huge whiff here.

The contract says "frick the consumers who pay for the service and who are struggling with no power for days on end. Instead protect the interests of the union itself".

Your posts completely miss the point.
