He took over in March of 2011. COCOM tours were once more reliably three years (often longer), but lately seeing CDRS turnover after two years (sometimes shorter) isn't all that unusual. I will say that it will be a bit more notable if he retires. If he's nominated for another 4-star billet, I wouldn't think too much of this one.

There was almost certainly an ESG in the Med at the time. There almost always is. I'm at 5th Fleet (Med is 6th), however, and am not an Ops guy anyway.
A deployed FAST platoon is essentially just a plussed up rifle platoon. I believe it has about 50 guys (instead of the standard 30-something) and is commanded by a Capt instead of a 2ndLT. Again, not a Marine and not ops, but that's my understanding. I'm sure some of the USMC folks around here can provided more and better information.
ETA: I think a standard platoon actually has 42, and a FAST platoon 52.

As I posted on 9/12 when this happened, and was called a "DumbFrick" for it, StateDept should have made clear to all countries in area that they expected US interests to be respected-personnel included. There should have been immediate response to this assault, instead we projected weakness.
Qhadaffi stayed in his hole and sang like a canary to Bush because he was afraid of Bush. The thugs in the ME are not afraid of Obama.
I agree with Mark Levin who said this happened because Obama was afraid to make a decision. And you can be sure Valerie Jarrett was right there pushing him to lay low. Clinton and Panetta had to go behind her back to get O to issue the kill order on BinLaden.
If Romney wins there should be no "let's get this behind us". The American people, especially the families of those left to die and history demands that the truth come out on this story.
What it does to Obama and the Dems is simply lagniappe
