It is an interesting point, but still doesn't work completely.

His great play, combined with that nickname catapulted him into the media and national spotlight and made him a talking point.

His nickname and his flashiness makes the media grab onto his fall a lot more than it would if the same story happened to someone else.

But he still failed all on his own regardless.

People always come up with some societal blame for things.
