( I posted this on the OT over the weekend, thought that this may be a better board)
I have a question about a cypress tree that I have. The story behind this tree is that about 2 years ago my son brought this home from school , planted as a small seedling in a Styrofoam coffee cup. As time went on we transferred it a couple of times as the tree grew. Now the tree is almost 6 foot tall (in the planter) and the time has come for it to be planted in the ground.
My question is can I take a small trimming off, plant it in potting soil, and grow a new tree from that trimming of a cypress tree?

you can plant on of its seeds (the big balls) and it should work.

I don't know the answer to your question but DO NOT plant that in your yard

your best best, and pretty easy, is to graft the tree

Why not? Concerned about the knees? I have two 10 year old cypress in my front yard. Knees will only come up (on my two trees) if there is standing water...like in my front ditch. There is not a single knee in my yard.

Not 100% sure but I don't think most conifers can be rooted from cuttings. Cypress are weird though, so you could always try.

No idea but I doubt it can be done. Would guess google could tell you but I would think you should use the seeds.

Ya'll grow any of the bonsai cypress up there? I would like to get one and I bet you could make sell quite a few...

We dont. Im sure someone does though. We mainly do landscape material, and a few edibles like blueberries, figs, etc...
