I guess it depends on what side of the medical business you're in.
If you're on the plaintiff side of the medical business, he's got a great rep. He does surgeries and runs up the specials on a case.

Problem with Isaza is he sees so many patients in one clinic that I am not sure how well his patient selection for surgery is. I have never seen him in surgery but I know most of his patients do well.

I would still head to Neuromedical center if I needed surgery.

Sounds like you are in the legal world, I am not, nor does it sound like the OP is. Isaza's surgical technique is suburb, his surgical patients do very well and he sees plenty of non personal injury patients. The OP seems to have tried conservative approach without much luck, if he ends up having surgery, isaza should be in that conversation

I have three of them along with tears in the nuclei of each. Two of the discs are impinging on the nerve roots at the L4/L5 region which has caused severe nerve damage. I have constant nerve pain in my left leg which is actually worse than the back pain. Also, i have lost feeling in my left foot due to the nerve damage. May be irreversible.
Some of this might have been avoided if I had gone ahead with the lesser invasive surgery. Now, the only thing that might help is a full blown fusion which I 'm in no hurry to go through. My suggestion would be to go ahead with the more "minor " surgery before it gets worse.
I saw Dr. Kevin McCarthy at Bone and Joint Clinic in BR three times, twice for steroid injections. I would not recommend him.
The only person I would consider for my surgery is Dr. Horace Mitchell at Neuromedical Center in BR. I have been seeing him for about two years now, and would not trust anyone else. One of the most knowledgeable doctors with the best personality I've ever seen.

Arrazelle - just curious, how quickly did you lose feeling in your foot from first onset of leg pain? I'm experiencing leg weakness, although not severe pain in either leg or back. Just discomfort in lower leg and weakness. Orthopedist thinks its related to back injury from many years ago and that nerve roots are being pinched. He's referring me to another ortho who specializes in spine to discuss options, including either pt or ESI's,but my first thought was to see a neuro since it sounded like a nerve issue and I didn't want to delay and end up with irreversible nerve damage. But as some have said in this post, sometimes u can't get in to see the good ones for 3 months.

For those in this thread who have had microdiscectomy procedure, how long was the recovery time and how long did it take for the leg strength to come back, if it did?

Scrantz, Oberlander, McCarthy are all very good at lumbar surgeries. I would recommend seeing a McKenzie certified PT before getting cut on, that's just me. Good luck

If you truly believe this, you my friend are an idiot. Just because you had one bad experience with a doctor in LA, you cannot group them all together. I have worked with many outstanding surgeons across all of the specialties. Yes, there are some bad ones. But please do not think just because you cross state lines that there will not be horrible doctors wherever you go.

I got referrred to isaza for mine. He was good. I went the injection route and that has worked great so far.

It really depends on each individual case. Some people have immediate relief and the strength comes back very quickly. Then there are people who never fully regain the strength. Most people regain strength rather quickly and are back to a normal sedentary lifestyle in 2-3 weeks. More active lifestyles can take months. If you start to have gross weakness then you need to look at your surgical options.

Seems to me that there's a over-lap between orthos and neuro's in that many in both fields specialize in the disorders and injuries of the spine. If there's issue with the vertebra or a fusion is required, seems to me that an ortho would be the person you would want to see. If its just a disc impinging on a nerve, seems to me that a neurosurgeon would be the one you would want to see. However, as many doctors in both fields specialize in the spine, sometimes you can see an ortho or a neuro for the same thing as there is an overlap in what both specialize in.

Don't look at it like this. Find out who the best are in your area. A good neuro or ortho spine surgeon should be able to do either a fusion or discectomy without issue. Look to get it done minimal invasively if possible. There are some ortho spine surgeons better than some neurosurgeons but overall a neurosurgeon has longer training and generally "better hands."
