By the time you factor in gas, food, time, and bait; those spec filets are looking mighty cheap

Absolutely correct. I can get redfish or drum on half shell across the street from my office for $12/ pound. This is 3 good sized pieces. You could eat them every day of the month at the market price and still not spend as much as you would on a boat note, tackle, gas, insurance, beer, etc.

To be 100% truthful I don't pay a dime for the specs. Coworkers are always offering up fish and venison in exchange for cooking at work. I have about 10lbs of snapped in the freezers waiting for the right day.

My brother is a boat captain for the big rigs deep out in the gulf.
He can get as many as he wants at any time of the day

I've never heard this. I've always seen them for sale. Although growing up in the parish, never had to buy fish.

I think they come from Mexico where they have a commercial fishery for them. I don't think there is a commercial fishery for them in Louisiana or anywhere in the Gulf.

Not sure on the actual rule on this and I am sure JasonL can help us out, but I seem to remember that there is a small amount of specks that can be caught and sold, but not with gill nets like they used to???

There is a quota for commercial spec fishing around a million pounds a year and only caught with commercial rod and reel. No nets. For commercial fishing there is also a 14" size limit and no weekend fishing.

For non commercial fishermen size limit is 12" and quantity limit of 25 per person as well.
