I've really enjoyed Game of Thrones on HBO. To the fact that I am contemplating reading the series. I am not an avid reader nowadays, but was in my youth - I'm 40, not 20 anymore. Probably the last movie/tv I watched first, then read the book was The Godfather (and both were made almost 20 years before I touched either).

For those that have read the series and watched the adaptation, would you recommend the read?

Edited: Game of Thrones is an HBO series NOT a Showtime series as I fricked up originally.

Is it better or worse than the HBO one?

Of course. I read the books before the series so I was already a big fan.

Touche. Dexter and Homeland have fricked up my station list. Not to mention Spartacus on Starz. That said...

I started the books partway through the first season and read two of them before the first season was over, then shortly finished the rest. Warning, you will likely become nonproductive in other areas of your life while reading these books.

I'm on my 3rd reread of the series and my 4th rewatch (on S2E2). Both are amazing.

Definitely read the books. The dreams ad prophesies are a blast to try and decipher and you get so much more background on a lot of things. Makes subsequent viewings of the tv show much better. I've rewatched both seasons with a different roommate each time

I read all the books in 2.5 weeks the first time. There that engrossing.

If I could wipe my memory of one thing and relive it, it would be my reading or the books

Everything Random Numbers said +1. Books are the best I've ever read. TV series is fun. Books are pure addiction

I watched the show and then started reading. I'm just starting the 4th book (A Feast For Crows) now. It's well worth your time.

I'm having trouble getting through the books. It doesn't grasp me like the tv series did.

The series is amazing. But what's even better is to read the books first, then watch the series. It allows you south more insight into what each character is thinking.
