I hate to say it but with that blood it's a good chance she ain't gonna make it.

I had an arrow kick off a limb and nail an 8 pter high in the backstrap like that a couple years back. Watched him take off and the arrow flip out about 40 yds away.
Three weeks later another guy on our lease killed him trailing a doe. Buck was on the back of his truck when I asked him to flip it over. Sure enough, pulled back the hair and there was the exit wound, all healed up already. Perfect match to the Rocky Mtn I used back then.

Difference here is that blood tells me you probably clipped the artery running on the bottom of the backbone. If the blood were darker I might think you caught part of the liver also, which is a lethal hit but doesn't finish them for hours.

Alot of times a deer will head back in the direction it came from because it knows that way is "safe". Might try checking water holes, creeks, ponds, etc that direction.

Something else to consider is if the deer is hit high there will be much less blood, especially once they start walking after the initial dash. If they cross a creek or pond it will wash off what little bit is coming out and water it down, making it harder to see. But you can usually keep in a general line of direction and find them. Once they settle down after the initial hit they often maintain a fairly straight course through the woods.

That said, a good deer dog helped my best friend find his 11 pt last year in less than 15 minutes after three guys had searched for 2 hrs for him.

Of course I wasn't there that day.

Good luck on finding her.

If its your theory that no mechanical blade has never opened too early or failed to open, you'd be dead wrong. But I'll take Felician's advice and let you think what you want.

That's not my theory. Opening early can happen easily if people do not change rubber bands over the years on those that need them. Still, that will not have much of an effect on the outcome. Failed to open? In last 10 years? I doubt it. People will claim it. Just like they claim they made a perfect shot. Just like they claim they saw a black panther, cottonmouth or El Chupacabre. Just like they will claim a Ms. Kite drowned a squirrel. Just like they will claim Bigfoot beat sticks up against trees.

Yeah, I agree with this. And a deer hit in the front quarters or shoulder will generally head uphill and if hit in the rear quarters, they'll generally head downhill. Down there in yall's flatland, ain't no tellin which way they'll head...

4 legged critters have almost no ability to go up hill with injured rear quarters. Conversely, they are required to place more weight forward going downhill. Injury up front makes this tough.

Other than the squirrel drowning. All are true.

Killed a nine pointer one season and he took a dive into a hole of water about 3 ft deep. It was right at dark. Luckily he was dead, and I could see his antlers sticking up.
