HARTSVILLE, SC (WIS) - A high school football player has died after he collapsed on the field during a game Friday night. The game was stopped after halftime.
Hartsville Mayor Mel Pennington says the police and fire chief confirmed Ronald Rouse has died.
The 6'3'' 305-pound sophomore was holding his chest when he collapsed. His player profile says Rouse is an offensive lineman.
After receiving some care on the field, Rouse got up and was helped off the field, but he collapsed again on the sidelines.
Rouse was given CPR and shocked with a defibrillator before the ambulance arrived to take him to the hospital.
Players and coaches from both sides prayed as medical personnel tended to Rouse.
Hartsville was hosting Crestwood.
After halftime, the stadium's Public Address announcer said because of the severity of Rouse's condition, the game would be stopped.

Heart defect.
Coach Nader's nephew collapsed during a game in his senior season. Nader's brother (kids dad) was giving CPR to his own son on the field.
Matt did not die but was diagnosed with a heart condition that forced him to give up football. He was a 4* recruit and was commited to UT.

That's awful. But it could have happened to him anywhere.
At least it wasn't football related.

An EKG as part of a physical should be a requirement to play HS sports

Sad to hear, just always terrible and scary to hear.
And UT still honored his scholarship and he stood on the sidelines his freshman year...not sure if he still does it.
An o-lineman from Tampa Plant just had to quit football because of concussions, not heart related but sad still.

Horrible. Witnessed a classmate pass during a game in high school... Never forget it. Prayers with the family, friends, and community.

When I was coaching basketball we mandated a physical with a EKG/cardiac review
Through this process we discovered a kid that had a heart defect and could have been a risk for a cardiac event
