Hanson has never lived up to hype and got progressively worse as his career went along. I'm not at all upset to see him go.
Me either. He may turn it around in Anaheim and people will bitch and moan about how we never should have let him go ala Adam Wainwright, but he was never going to become anything more than a mediocre pitcher for us. He has steadily seen his velocity go down and his waistline go up. Combine that with the fact that he issues too many walks, gives up 5 stolen bases a game, and can't make it through 6 innings and you have a bottom of the rotation starter. If we got a decent bullpen prospect for him, it was a steal.

Interesting move.
We have to be angling for a bigger signing/trade or something.
I'd say pretty low chance we fill LF with a run around like LUdwick or ross.

I thought we were a few million short of Pagan and the pineapple eating bitch's (frick him btw) asking price, so this may have been an effort to free up that last 2 or 3 million to get a deal done.

We traded Hanson, not Beachy, Minor, Huddy, or Meds.
Okay. Soooooo.... what?
He hasn't become the ace people thought he was going to be in Atlanta... but he's certainly talented enough. Nothing changes with me saying he's a top 3 rotational pitcher.
Let's pretend he was a 4th or 5th starter, it's still a in a 1 for 1 deal for Jordan Walden. Hanson is 26 and still carries ace potential... whether or not it comes into fruition is a whole different story.

We traded Tommy Hanson.
He is not close to a top 3 guy right now.
I hope he turns it around, but if he doesn't he'll have a 5+ ERA next year
Great trade for the Braves. Frees up money and we got a good bullpen arm back.
Hanson had no place in the Braves rotation if he pitched like he did last year

You don't get it, do you? It's not about who we are getting in return. It's about dumping a contract to free up some payroll.

Yeah, I fear that we're all expecting a big move now but this could very well have been done just to afford Victorino or Pagan. There's still a few more spots that need to be filled on the bench and pen and I'm not sure if those in their arb years have been accounted for (the raises).

Yeah, he's only 26. That's still young. Dude was still top 25 in the MLB in k/9 last season. He has good stuff. If his only problem is something as easy as getting in shape, then that's not a big deal.
Minor had a nice 2nd half, but he's still a question mark.
Beachy coming off TJ
Medlen is titty skins
Hudson is a year older.
Maholm? Who knows?

I understand it's a salary dump and a precursor to a bigger deal. I absolutely get it. I'm not upset Hanson is gone. I understand he's been regressing and has had injury issues.
Still doesn't change the fact I feel we should have gotten a better return... which is all I am saying.

You can dump money and still get a good deal in return.

He isn't a top of the rotation arm. A change of scenery may do him some good, but he's never going to consistently be a sub 3.50 ERA, 200+ innings pitcher. His delivery is going to hold him back from ever becoming much more than a 4th or 5th starter. It's slow, inconsistent, and puts a lot of added strain onto his arm. That leads to high walks, lots of stolen bases, and high pitch counts. Ace pitchers don't have those problems. Medlen and Beachy are the kind of guys who have ace potential. Not Hanson.
We also freed up a lot of money that we would have had to pay him, and like Whitie said, Hanson wasn't going to have a spot in our rotation next year anyway barring a quick 180. The fact that we freed up money to go after more than a stop gap in LF and got a guy who can possibly contribute to our bullpen makes that trade a win for our franchise.

Bingo.
There are tons of teams looking for pitching. You can't tell me this is the best deal for Tommy Hanson.

I loathed watching the Braves every 5 days when Hanson would throw 100 pitches in 5 innings and give up 5 runs. I'm glad I won't have to see that anymore. With that being said, is it Justin Upton time now?

He's declined every year in the bigs. His ERA+ last year was sub-90.
Braves didn't want to be in a Jair Jurrjens situation when he didn't come around and get nothing in return.
I generally agree with your sentiment, but having watched Tommy for 4 years, I think it's pretty clear he's not headed up.

Hanson had pretty much no value though. I thought the Braves might wait till the trade deadline to move him to see if be recovered some value, but either they don't have faith in that or they decided they needed to free up the money now.
His velocity has declined every year. This year it was down to 88-89 compared to 95-96 when he first came up. He almost never made it through 6 innings because of control problems and trouble putting guys away. He was slow as Christmas to the plate, and frankly the Braves have 6-7 options they like more right now with Hudson, Medlen, Maholm, Minor, Delgado, Teheran, and then Beachy around July.
Besides this is freeing up money for Justin Upton, obviously

I can guarantee you weren't saying this crap his first couple of years in and throughout his minor league ascension into the majors. He may never become that guy you mentioned... I've acknowledged it and said it myself. He may not have produced as a top 3 rotational arm this past year, but there is no question he has the arm for it.

All that's understood. However if Hanson was on this team next year, he would had a rotational spot. Afterall, Beachy is coming off TJ.

Dan made an excellent point last year...he said that Hanson isn't as frustrating to watch if you accept him as a terribly average bottom of the rotation guy.
Last year he was below average, and he's strongly trending downward. When you look at it like that, it doesn't seem like a bad deal.
I hope Tommy turns it around our there, but I doubt he would have here
