Well that's dumb. I can only have an opinion on stuff I like? If that's the case I'm guess I should be indifferent toward our president, jock itch, and the New York Mets? Anyway I have never tried to get into Elvis Costello. My limited knowledge of his music comes from what I've inadvertantly heard over my 34 years on this planet. Obviously I've not heard near as much of his music as one of his fans has. But still, I think I've heard a big enough sampling to form an opinion. They play a pretty fair amount of EC on Sirus/XM Outlaw country. I've heard many of his songs over the last few years. I have yet to hear one I like. Matter of fact, his God-awful cover of "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down" is what prompted this thread. I realize many people like his music. Fine by me. I don't like it. Matter of fact I think it sucks.

I don't think there's an artist who has done more to squander his good will than Elvis Costello, other than Rod Stewart. Costello's first three albums are great, one of the best first three albums of any artist: My aim is True, This Year's Model, and Armed Forces are all deserved classics with plenty of great songs. Since then, it's been a long, steady decline which has resulted in him just releasing whatever sentimental pap he thought up that day. He hasn't made a good song since "Veronica" and probably not a good album since 1982 (Imperial Bedroom). What happened to this guy?

I agree that his later output is uneven and i dont find him as a "must buy" Our opinion on his decline differs a bit... I like his output through out the 80's and he rounded out the decade with the classic "Tramp the Dirt Down" off of Spike... I really enjoyed his collaboration a few years back with Toussaint... Costello has at least tried even though the songs weren't there all the time... Stewart just decided to start recording garbage... Greil Marcus once said the two biggest betrayals of talent were Rod Stewart and Alex Chilton...

I think his 80s stuff is uneven. He doesn't have any must buy albums, but he could still record some good songs. You could make a greatest hits of 82-91 and make a real good album. but after Spike... I'm out entirely. I think Costello is now enjoying playing in front of symphonies and turning out mediocre crap for middle aged men who think everything is too loud. I would add him to the Rod Stewart lost (Chilton gets a bit of a pass, because the dude had to make money and Big Star wasn't a commercial success). Stewart and Costello had options.

I could understand if Chilton sold out like Stewart to make Money, but he went the other way and made music that was almost unlistenable... There is nothing post Big Star that is worth owning (although I do own High Priest)...

Agreed. Balls, I used to be a fan. The stuff just does not hold up for me with the exception of Oliver's Army. Still love that song. One of the worst live shows I've ever seen.

I agree with Baloo. But, I can listen to his early stuff all day long. My Aim is True is one of my favorite albums of all time. I think I can listen to every track on that album and enjoy it.
