I tend to question stories like that. It almost has a "me too" feel to it. Someone gets beat up by the police and everyone else wants to say they've been beat up by the police. I agree that if you are only scared of the police then you haven't been to any of the bad areas. That's just ignorance speaking(or posting)

I've never been but I've read enough. I also see the bad areas in even small cities...and I can use my brain and understand how much worse it gets in the bigger ones.

pain and suffering? he didn't even suffer any injuries, not even a white eye or a thin lip.

It was excessive, but not ALL 15 were throwing him around.

How many of the ones that weren't throwing him around filed a report on excessive force against the ones that WERE throwing him around, IYO?

We should disband all police departments.

California is already far into the red so an extra 20 mil taxpayer dollars shouldn't really matter.

Why do you care about my opinion? The original quote I was responding to wasn't factual so I corrected him.

falsifying reports

That happens quite frequently, along with perjury during testimony that they seem to get away with.

quote:

On December 1, 1998 Harvard Law School Professor, Alan M. Dershowitz testified before the House of Representatives Judiciary Committee regarding the corrosive influences of perjury in the legal system throughout the United States. When considering credentials, there is probably no other person more qualified to speak about perjury in the U.S. legal system than Dershowitz. He has been teaching criminal law at Harvard Law School for 35 years. He has participated in the litigation of hundreds of federal and state cases, many at the appellate level. He has edited a casebook on criminal law, written ten books, and hundreds of articles dealing with perjury in criminal and civil cases.

The key points of Mr. Dershowitz's testimony before the Judiciary Committee are as follows:

* No felony is committed more frequently in the United States than the genre of perjury and false statements
* Criminal cases often are decided "according to the preponderance of perjury"
* Police perjury in criminal cases is so pervasive that "hundreds of thousands of law-enforcement officers commit felony perjury every year testifying about drug arrests" alone
* The most heinous brand of lying (perjury by police officers) is the giving of false testimony that results in the imprisonment or execution of an innocent person
* Less egregious, but still quite serious, is false testimony that results in the conviction of a person who committed the criminal conduct, but whose rights were violated in a manner that would preclude conviction if the police were to testify truthfully
* Police Officers are almost taught how to commit perjury when they are in the Police Academy
* Police perjury is not anecdotal. Many commission reports prove rampant abuses in police departments throughout the United States
* Judges and prosecutors tolerate if not encourage police lying in court all in the name of convicting the factually guilty

According to the Mollen Commission the practice of police falsification is so common that it has spawned its own word -- testilying

* Officers commit perjury to serve what they perceive to be "legitimate" law enforcement ends
* In the viewpoint of most police officers, regardless of the legality of the arrest, the defendant is in fact guilty and ought to be arrested
* When prosecutors are preparing for a trial, they often arrange "dry runs" as part of the trial preparation procedure. Frequently, prosecutors skirt along the edge of coercing or leading the police witness
* As a result, impressionable young cops learn to tailor their testimony (commit perjury) to the requirements of the law

And there is more to read here from the Mollen Report which was published in 1994, and the Dershowitz testimony from 1998.

Edit: Correct link provided for the Mollen Report.

Speaking of.. I grew up in BTR. NEVER had any run-ins with the law. Good student, went to LSU, getting my degree, walking back to my car after an LSU game to go to work (Dominos) and make some post game cash-ola.

Officer asked to see my ID. I had a cup in my hand but it was an empty stadium cup and I hadn't been drinking. So, I said "Its empty" and kept walking. He then yelled, "SHOW ME YOUR ID." I confusingly asked "Why?". Which he followed with "SHOW ME YOUR GOD DAMNED ID". I was then sort of pissed this guy is yelling at me for no reason so I unfortunately said, "Screw you, I don't have to show you shit"

10 cops and 15-30 seconds later, a girl comes up and says, "No, that's not him"

Why not just say, "Sir, I need to see your ID. You match a suspect I'm looking for"

Which, I would of said. "Yeah, sure thing" I would've been HAPPY to show you my ID if you're looking for a bad guy. And where do you mother frickers come from? I swear y'all were jumping out of trees like Ninjas and shite.

i'm not going to comment on every little bit of that stupidit, but......

* As a result, impressionable young cops learn to tailor their testimony (commit perjury) to the requirements of the law

tailoring testimony is not perjury. perjury is lying in court.

oh and defense council does it just as much as prosecutors do. the line is thin, but doing one is legal, the other not.

Perhaps the suspect was a violent mental patient that had assaulted a woman but had short term memory loss and reminding him of why the ID was to be provided would throw him into a fit of rage.

bull shite. you would have given that guy a hard time no matter how he asked. and that is EXACTLY why cops don't frick around with dick heads.

you are required by law to stop and identify when a cop lawfully asks you to.

Dude, I lived for 20 years before getting into a fist fight. And that guy hit me with a bottle prior to it going to fisticuffs. So, no...I'm not a hot head.

And like I said, the average citizen doesn't know they are or are not required to do. I know that now, but it sure could have been a lot easier exchange.

Thanks for the links man. I never said it wasn't a problem. Any problem of that nature is a big problem. I just don't believe it to be happening on as large of a scale as some like to act like. I don't like the idea that we should trust zero cops because some are bad. If we applied that standard to all professions, there wouldn't be many prestigious professions anymore.

And if you were that person and the officer told you that you would likely run. If he had your ID and you ran it would be much easier to find you and hopefully recover the stolen property.
