Assad definitely needs to go. But let the Turks or the Syrian rebels handle that. We don't need to get involved in that hell hole. By the way, would anyone else on here besides me tap his wife?

Only in lieu of not knowing what would replace it. Be careful what you ask for.

Aren't the Islamists moving on Turkey; own a lot of the government? I watched a comprehensive expose re Syria, on FrontLine; and I'll be damned if I can figure out which is the lesser evil over there. Hell, we might look like Syria in a couple of years; all it took to start a war was for the government to put a bunch of juveniles in jail for being juveniles; and threaten to use them as examples for what happens when the folk dis the government. For now...whatever undermines the power of Iran, will work.

Will Iran let that happen without getting involved?

good question. iran definitely wants to see assad stay in power. but turkey looks legit in doing this since syria lobbed mortars over the border. if iran intervenes, it also gives legitimacy to the US getting involved i dont think iran intervenes overtly. they'll ramp up support and covert weapon sales and such, but i dont think they deploy troops

The only negative for Obama would be if we sit by and watch as other countries get involved instead of letting the two go at it. There needs to be some leadership to just let the two kids fight it out without it becoming kindling for something bigger.

Any idea how strong Turkey's military is compared to Syria & Iran. Isn't Turkey in NATO and then can invoke Article 5?

If the Iranians were shrewd, they would have thrown Assad under the bus over a year ago and starting championing the cause of rebels the same way Obama did Mubarak. The changes taking place in the Mideast are inevitable, and those who don't ride the tide of history will be swept up by it.

Fox news said Turkey has called a meeting of NATO. I have a feeling shite is bout to go down. Turkey has been getting sick of taking care of the refugees

Turkey is the only country in the world with a majority Muslim population but a secular government (which must remain secular by Constitution). Last I read about it, a large, large majority of the country wants to keep it secular. But, as you semi-mention, there are muslim political groups in Turkey, including the ruling AKP party. It's been getting a bit authoritarian recently and may be a threat to secular freedom.
