Returns tonight at 8ET. I'm pretty excited about it.

quote:

Broke explores the roads to fortune in American sports and eventually, the many detours to bankruptcy. Curt Schilling, Bernie Kosar, Andre Rison and Cliff Floyd are among the athletes who talk openly about the challenges of managing their money. In an era when big contracts don’t necessarily support bigger lifestyles, athletes are often sucked into bad investments, stalked by freeloaders and saddled with medical problems. Eventually, many pro athletes get shocked by harsh economic realities after years of living the high life. A story of the dark side of success, Broke is an allegory for the financial woes haunting economies and individuals all over the world.

I know a guy who played in the NFL for close to 20 years as a deep snapper--you can last a long time doing that, if you're good at it. As a career niche player, he didn't make millions, but his salary was huge by non-sports standards; well into six figures. He didn't want to play that long, but his savings were wiped out by bad investments at the midway point in his career, along with a lot of his teammates. Many of these guys are unsophisticated about money, and get unwise or downright fraudulent advice.

The good news for him is he gets a ~$70000 pension starting at age 55.

I really enjoyed it. Crazy to see their personal experience. Still ridiculous how pro athletes blow so much money!
