I'll give her the gun back after I know she can shoot it and not hurt anyone or herself - just the intended target.
Probably a good idea.

So she has a permit, she has been around guns but not shot this gun and you feel the need to take her gun from her? Is she mentally unstable? If so, why is she there to help with the kid, otherwise give her back her gun...

This.

If some thug perpetrates a home invasion with your house as the selected site, you'll wish she had the gun.

p.s. There is no such thing as a "pistol permit." There are concealed handgun permits (some states use different terminology) that allows the permit holder to carry concealed (in purse, under a shirt or jacket, etc).

The OP's MIL has one, and had enough sense to bring it with her to Louisiana. I think she's way ahead of the OP in terms of family security. I don't think the OP, based on his comments ("have not owned a handgun in a very long time"), is the best person to evaluate her competency.

I was a bit confused about this as well, but if you refer to the OP with pictures, you can clearly see "Pistol Permit."

I guess in Alabama it means a CHL.

That's a good point. I was viewing it in terms of places like Illinois where one has to have a FOID card just to be able to buy/own a gun. Here in the "free world" we don't need a permit to buy or own a handgun (at least until after the November election).

Shotgun and baseball bat for family security in this house. My MIL is a smart and competent lady. However, before she brings a handgun into my home, I would like to know that she can use it properly for it's intended use. Seeing as she has never had a class, never fired the weapon, AND, has stated she thinks she needs to take one, I asked her to keep the gun in her vehicle. I think that is fair and so does she. She was asking just now about shooting ranges in B.R. - that's a good thing. I just choose not to own handguns. I grew up fishing and hunting and think that anyone who wants to bear arms has the right to do so. I choose not to own handguns - and this is 'Merica still where we have such freedoms. I didn't mean to portray that I confiscated her gun. I just asked her if I could put in in her car and I took it and put it in the console. She respects my home. My home, my rules...right. Thanks for all of the good advice. I let her know that she has reciprocity and is legal in LA. She was .

I agree. Your home, your rules.
To take it a step further, get your MIL enrolled in a course of Self defense specializing in handguns. I'm sure there's one offered somewhere.

Also, remind her a weapon that she is not familiar with or competent with can be used against her by an assailant. Not to mention...should she choose to use the weapon, her lack of skill could wound/kill an innocent.

Madison can't be that bad right? Except for that the Huntsville newspaper only talks about Auburn?

It's not just the football. It's the people. It's the attitude. Alabama is the "State of Perception". I've never worked/lived in a place where people, in general, try to stereotype one another based on perceptions. They can't seem to accept people at face value here.

As far as the football goes, the sportsmanship here is POOR. It is the worst I've ever seen it. "Bashing" doesn't even come close. Believe it or not, I've actually had to file complaints based on the types of ridiculous pranks and trash done to me when LSU has lost to Alabama or Auburn. It's not good hearted ribbing..it's taken to whole new level.

I'll agree the level of sportsmanship from the more vocal parts of both fan bases is absurd. They (either team) cant win or lose well. The hatred for all things crimson or blue/orange is amazing.

As a Bama fan, with Auburn family members, we dont talk football, at all, ever, period. my inlaws on the other hand are LSU fans so all we do is talk football.

Tell her ladies shoot free Monday through Thursday at Precision Indoor Range (Cloverland Ave.).

Agreed. And if they aren't busy, one of the guys behind the counter probably wouldn't mind coaching her at the stall. They just sit there so I'm sure they wouldn't mind having something else to do.
