Clock Management Woes

Is there a particular reason why Alleman had to rush that last FG (he kicked it with 2 seconds on the playclock)? I mean, I understand what Les Miles has accomplished at LSU, his record speaks for itsaelf, but these braindead moments occur too often. If you don't get the 1st down, you know you're going to kick the FG. Might it be a good idea to have the FG team standing on the sidelines ready to run onto the field and line up? What am I missing? Who is the special teams coach?

Wouldve been better to take the penalty and kick than rush and kick

1. Used the last timeout on the previous play, which I suppose was an iffy choice in hindsight
2. Took a few extra seconds to get the decision on accepting or declining the penalty, which determined if we were leaving the offense on the field or running out the kicking team.
3. Play clock started at 25 seconds rather 40 because of the penalty, which exacerbated the above two.
The kick should have been made regardless. Hurry up FGs are practiced constantly.
eta: 2 seconds on the clock is not relevant. We would have kicked it with that much left no matter the situation, as we wanted to drain as much time as possible.

At least Les acknowledged the "error" in his post game presser. I felt bad for Alleman.

Maybe, but even better would have been having the FG kick team ready to run on the field and line up. I was at the game but understand that folks watching on TV said that Miles was trying to talk to Alleman or something and Alleman was pointing to the clock and telling him he needed to get on the field and kick the FG ... did that really happen?

I didn't see this. I did see Miles confirming the declined penalty and then calling for the field goal once that was determined to be the case.

Les Miles and a Clock ... BAD combination

Still les miles didnt kick the ball. Alleman did. I also didnt think it was a clock issue. We were trying to run time off the clock. Rushed or not it was a bad kick.

How often do they occur? I mean, as compared to the national NCAA football coach average?

There was a penalty on the play, and we needed to actually wait to see if we were going to have 3rd and 14 or 4th and 3. How pissy would people be had we put our FG team out there, they take the penalty, and then we get a delay of game penalty b/c our offense isn't ready for 3rd down?

Well, they obviously were. Alleman missed the kick. He had time to make it.

Wasn't that bad. Practice that all the time. He just missed the kick.

I was there, sitting in the endzone on the 7th row, right behind the goalpost ... it was rushed. It didn't miss by much. Miles has his strengths, his record at LSU speaks for itself -- but he and/or his staff have BRAINDEAD moments -- TN, Old Ms, there are others. Maybe he should hire a clock management coach.

Bookmarking so I can come back to read this extensive list. I don't think the fg last night should even be included in that massive resume of braindeadedness, but everyone has an opinion.
It's also a logical concept that Les and the staff might not have any more incidents like this than any other coach, but it's noticed more by fans of the team, because they pay more attention and critique the team more than they do for teams they don't follow closely. Nah, totally ignorant thought on my part...

Logical thinking is not tolerated on this board.

It was definetly rushed, They just ran up to the line, set, and he tapped the ball. If they had been set already I think he could have made that one easy.

i don't know why people need to jump to Les' defense on everything he does. I saw the ref announce the penalty and say that it was declined, then declared it 4th down... with his microphone on and presumably in full sight of Les Miles. Several seconds later (5 or 6) the camera saw Les talking to someone and then looking very shocked when he presumably found out it was 4th down. From there on out it was a mess.
Hey, clock management is one of his few flaws as a head coach, but it seems to have returned this year.

McGrath is correct... That is exactly what happened. Clearly evident on the televised broadcast of the game. Sadly, we were not surprised when we saw it live and then confirmed it on a review of the moment.

I keep seeing it posted last night "?while it was going on" that Les had to ask one of the coaches what down it was. People shouldn't throw stones because people bring up his clock issues. It's a part of his life, deal with it.

I'm not defending anything, just recalling what I saw from TV. The ref had his back to the LSU bench. Watch it again. Les asked someone if it was 3rd or 4th down (i.e. was the penalty declined or accepted), he got told and called for the fg team. He had his finger in his open ear, because he was talking to his coaches in the both and the crowd was going nuts.
The fg was rushed, but Alleman went through his full presnap routine and was set when the ball was snapped with 2 seconds remaining on the game clock. He should have made it. I will say Les might not have been aware that the playclock starts at 25 after a penalty, which he should and is a problem if true.

...no , no , no ... you just take the 5 yd delay of game ... and set up with plenty time ..well within Allemanm's range ... no brainer
