Ended up having to release Josey Wales due to an illness that screwed up his training. And I think it might have actually been a congenital defect that would show up again later.

Anyway, we went out trapping Saturday and I now have a new new hawk for 2012. Hopefully this one is a bit hardier.

The aptly named, "Hawkeye":

I'll make it happen eventually. The "other" falconer in town, also an apprentice, bought a pair of those camera glasses. She'll be hunting with me some, so I should get some good footage. Right now, the only thing he's trying to demolish is me.

Speaking of which, how in the world do you get that hat on him without him tearing you to shreds?

I was actually talking about this thread/topic this weekend with my brother. I think it would be awesome to do something like this, just know I don't have the patience for it.

Well, they'll kind of try to bite sometimes, but their main defense is their talons. They tend to get dodgier about the hood once they get used to you. In the beginning, they're pretty much too scared to do much but open their mouths and look mean, except for the feet, always watch out for the feet.

I believe you need a license.
I'm going to check into this too, very interested.

Only if you're a licensed falconer. Then, for the first two years, you'll be limited to certain species (most states, Red tail, kestrel, and red-shouldered hawk). And, you can only keep birds that hatched this year, except with kestrels. And, you're only allowed one replacement bird if you lose yours, or it dies, or you release it for whatever reason.

After the first two years, you move from apprentice to general, and you have a few more options.

Haha. It's a very basic, utilitarian hood. Some of them are works of art.

Nice research. You can now say you are an expert on falconry.
