Lucky or phenomenal defense and special teams that could change the game almost at will?
Look at 1/9, our defense and special teams, specifically punting, kept Bama at bay until they ran out of gas. That wasn't luck, it was skill.

Had LSU not lost to Bama in the BCS title game 2011 LSU would be considered one of the greatest teams of all time.
i argued that this was sillly PLENTY of times before the title game, and they didn't just lose, they were butt fricked the entire game. that game displayed everything wrong with the 2011 LSU team that i pointed out numerous times in the threads discussing that argument

I think the fact that 2011 Bama did that to such a great team should put them up there in consideration as one of the greatest non undefeated teams ever.
basically Bama didn't let LSU get a pick 6 or return TD AND stop the run. if you could do those things, you could beat LSU

Winning on the road by 3 points>winning on a neutral field by 20.
In your weird opinion, yeah.

but the only games you could really argue that for are Oregon and UGA.

It's hard to judge "best" across eras, and I really like 1983 Nebraska as an answer, but no one-loss team has the resume of 2011 LSU. It's astounding the number of good teams LSU beat, and beat by blowout. It was 1995 Nebraska-esque. LSU beat THREE BCS bowl winners, two of them by blowout and all on the road (though one was a neutral site). That's an astoundingly tough schedule. And that's leaving off another win over a top 5 team in Arkansas.

So that's luck? No, it's superior talent and execution.

You mean the game when RR dropped an easy TD and then we missed a chip shot FG?
Funny that you only count the non traditional TD's that go our way.

if you try to rely on special teams TDs for points and momentum swings, you're going to get destroyed

bama didn't try anything to limit the possibility of a defensive turnover (like teh one that flipped the momentum in the game at bama). they just kept kicking FG

Let me put in an old-school vote, which also happens to be a homer vote.
1939 Tennessee
10-1
PF: 212
PA: 14
The 14 points they gave up were in the bowl game, which they lost to USC. They didn't give up a point in the regular season.

kickoff return TDs are pretty lucky, especially when they come after a team scored and picked up momentum
if we were so skillfull in KR, why didn't we score more of them in 2011? did our talent and execution die in the other games?

They had Trent Richardson. They didn't need to try anything fancy

AJ also carved up tyrann, which was a safe play

absolutley. 83 Nebraska and 86 Miami are my default answers from before the 2000's.

You got the feeling that a great run D and really good QB and receivers could have beat LSU handily - even while watching them last year.
Like 2008 USC or the Gators...
or previous Bama teams or how is LSU going to keep up with '05 SC...I don't know how '11 LSU can be in this discussion. Magical year until the end...but

saying LSU has a dysfunctional passing game means we will frick up easy passing TDs
we fricked up all sorts of potential scoring plays in the passing game all year. it's b/c we had a shitty passing offense
the FG was out of the ordinary

exactly why i said 2001 Miami and 2004 USC would have handled LSU. they could stop the run and had excellent QB-WR combos

i agree with you, ST TD's are pretty lucky, I'm not a big believer in "momentum, but that's a different discussion. when you win by 3 scores, you are probably a lot better team. Lucky breaks cut both ways.

I just don't think you can put so much into luck and momentum in a game won by 3 TDs

momentum? quitting? however you want to describe it, that LSU-UGA game was an example.
