We'll do this one different. You'll bitch about the pic not being enough info but it is if you're good. I know what this snake is. He was in the middle of the road in NW La and had made it that far trying to get away by the time I got back and had my camera ready on my phone. He's about four feet long. No I didn't kill it.
Name that snake!

Dorothy Wins!
Was a beautiful Canebrake Rattler. First one I've seen up here in decades.

Canebrake and timber rattlers are the same thing...just called different names in different regions.
For the record, it's canebrake where I'm at.

I was unaware that this was being debated. I thought surely there were subs,
quote:
The subspecies C. h. atricaudatus (Latreille in Sonnini and Latreille, 1802), often referred to as the canebrake rattlesnake,[2] is currently considered invalid.[27] Previously, it was recognized by Gloyd (1936) and Klauber (1936). Based on an analysis of geographic variation, Pisani et al. (1972) concluded that no subspecies should be recognized. This was rejected by Conant (1975), but followed by Collins and Knight (1980). Brown and Ernst (1986) found evidence for retaining the two subspecies, but state that it is not possible to tell them apart without having more information than usual, including adult size, color pattern, the number of dorsal scale rows and the number of ventral scales. Dundee and Rossman (1989) recognized atricaudatus, but others take a more neutral point of view.

Eastern Diamondback, Western DiamondBack, Canebreak, Northern timber, Southern timber, Pygmy, and all the others... To me, they're ALL just rattlesnakes. And I'm skeered of em.
