re: Apple Fanboys unite! Sept 21 we ride! (iPhone 5 release date)

i think apple's strategy is customer loyalty, which is why it's so important for apple to link its products together

that will sustain it for a good while

the issue will be the next collaboration/consolidation of personal electronic life. if some other company figures out a better way to do this (and market it), then apple will be in a bind, b/c it's so proprietary and closed

like its docking mechanism. changing that will invalidate all the old tech. apple customers have shown they're loyal enough to replace their old shit, but will that always be true (especially if new tech does it better)?

Means I will be able to go get the 4s for cheap. That is if I decide to stay with apple. That new Galaxy is pretty sweet.

I'm still running with my 3gs. But it's definitely time for a new phone.

I'm due for an upgrade on verizon. How much will the iPhone 5 cost if I sign a new 2 year contract?

I understand that they make high quality products.

I just haven't found much of a need to incorporate them into my digital ecosystem. I have an old iPod classic just for the purpose of connecting it to my factory stereo in my car.

That's the only apple product I'll own for now. I'd consider an iPad if I was really eager to get a tablet but I'm not. I think I'd rather have a laptop, or at the least something like the ASUS transformer that can act as both a tablet and laptop.

but lots of people have done this and consolidated their entire ecosystem into apple products

their existence is basically an extension of their itunes accounts, used through various apple peripherals

i'm not criticizing these people, i'm just saying they've invested to go "all in" on this consolidation and will remain loyal for a while. that's the key growth area. and i'll say this: apple has done a really good job of incorporating their shite into one ecosystem

Macs have outgrown the PC market for something like 28 quarters in a row.

every new iphone has sold more than every generation iphone before it combined.

every new iPad has sold more than every generation iPad before it combined.

The iPad is selling faster than the iPhone.

iPad Air around the corner.

Apple TV sells 4 million units this year and is still considered a hobby.

It's not sustainable long term, but they still have plenty of room to grow. Especially in China.

To be fair, both smart and dumb people buy apple products.

But it's definitely the "default" smart phone for idiots

If it makes the product "better" I have no issue with it.

Apple iPhone 5 cable will follow in the footsteps of its MacBook siblings, integrating MagSafe connection technology to snap the cable into place on the device and offer a simpler, more secure fit.

if you are familiar with "magsafe" then as an iPhone owner this will be a welcome update to the device.

I don't really see it happening. Magsafe was made so if someone trips over the cord, it comes out easy. If someone trips over a cord plugged into an iphone, the iphone is going to go flying with or without magsafe.

The 4s to the 5 might not be a huge difference, but the 3GS to the 4/4s was a HUGE difference. It was a totally different phone. Faster, better picture quality, less crashing....

I had the original dinosaur, the 3GS, and I'm using the. 4gs now. I wont be getting the 5 for another year and a half (per contract) but if I could upgrade now, why wouldn't I?

but you'll have to either buy a whole new slew of products or wait to upgrade one piece until you can do it all

it's a gamble

usually consumers get tired of having to do that every few years

also i've heard rumors of apple getting super proprietary with its new dock, eliminating 3rd party conversions/uses

This is the first time they've changed it in 11 years.

apple has used the same plug since I can remember for its devices.. i remember when everyone went from mini USB to micro USB..
I do not recall there being a huge consumer backlash. other manufacturers used to change plugs all the time. (see samsung)
