OB duck and inshore boat buyers beware - tldr in bold

I just got off the phone with a buddy of mine, and he is quite mad to say the least. I figured I had to pass this story along to the OB.
Two and a half months ago, said buddy bought a brand new 24' bay boat, via a local dealership, from a very popular all-weld aluminum boat manufacturer. I won't name the dealer or maker, because as a result of this tale lawyers are now involved, but it shouldn't be hard to figure the manufacturer out.
Week one of owning his new boat. Runs the outboard through all the paces, then he takes it to the spillway and does some bass fishing. No issue. That weekend, he and I make a trip to Golden Meadows and catch some trout. Boat is in the water for less than 24 hrs. We trailer it, and hose the salt off, but don't do much else.
Sunday, he starts to really clean the boat and 1' square pieces (that's feet not inches) of paint start literally falling off the hull. He calls the dealer. Story is that four have come back that month with the same issue, bring it in and they'll make it right. Dealer sends boat several states away to be repainted.
Two months later (all the while he's still on the hook for the note) the boat arrives, after promises that it will be no more than a 3 week turnaround. Assuming everything is fine, he installs new speaker system, and upgrades the nav.
Tonight I get the phone call, and he sounds like he's about to stroke out. Hosing off some dirt he tracked in working on it, he finds a 1/4" chip in the paint on the deck has grown to a 4" circle, and immediately hauls it to the auto body shop his friend owns. Friend proceeds to tell him that not only was the deck repainted without being sanded (so that's all coming off), but the entire hull was too (chips off a piece of the new hull paint with his thumbnail, to reveal the old paint underneath) and he's looking at being back at square one in a mater of months.
FWIW, the dealership has promised him a brand new boat, but he is seriously considering just getting out all together with his money back, minus the 3 months worth of notes he's paid while being boatless.
I know a lot of you guys might be considering a new duck boat for teal season, or a bay boat for fall speck fishing. Take your time in making your choice, get it checked out, and BE CAREFUL.

Xpress. I have heard of same problem several times on several boards. I have owned 2 xpress boats and had no issues, but they were older models. I think the problems are with the newer ones.

Xpress fudged a couple hundred paint jobs. I heard the problem was they allowed to much drying time in between coats on a batch of boats. Its good to hear they are trying to make it right.
I hope this warrinty work doesn put them out of business like champion and their rotted floors

Been having my Xpress 2 years with no issues.
The decals are starting to come off but who cares..
Wonder if I could LSU wrap it?

I can neither confirm nor deny, but be wary of anyone unloading a relatively new aluminum boat at a price that's too good to be true.

Again, not naming names, but his is only three months old. The original problem could be an honest mistake, but my boss pointed out that shite must be hitting the fan if they just try to cover it up rather than actually fixing it once they know something is defective in their process.

I'd take the new boat from the dealer if I was him I think

I believe chopiquesushi could give you some info on that if serious

Yea I would definately take the new one. I understand the guy being mad but that is going above and beyond to make a bad situation right. They could have just said "oh that sucks, come at me bro"

You're right, but the whole reason he's pissed is because it already went back to the factory once, but came back with double the problems. It's the dealership offering the new boat, but only the exact same model with the risk of the same problems. The dealership has been stand-up through all of this, while the manufacturer won't even return his phone calls.

The new boat won't have the issues. They figured out what the problem was. People get greedy, try a short cut and sometimes it comes back to haunt you

I'll pass that along to him.

I'd like to know what jackasses at the factory figured it was a good idea to fix a paint job that didn't stick by simply painting right over it, though.

I bought a bass boat and my dad got a 21' bay boat from anmentioned brand dealer in the capital of La and besides a little flaking on my consol we haven't had any problems :crossesfingers

Boats, that's what pissed him off more than anything. Felt like he had been served shite and told it was steak. But like HB said if he can get a new boat that the paint stays stuck to, he's luckier than some and should just let it ride.
Feliciana, if you fellas had the issue it probably would have shown up by now. Both times it was only a matter of days before paint was fallin off. It seems to be boats made in the last 6 months, knock on wood.

That's what I'm thinking. And at least he'll have a brand new boat rather than one that's a few months old with 3 coats of paint (if they even fixed it correctly this time).
I'll say it's kinda sad that a manufacturer that paints all it's boats (or somebody who paints for that manufacturer) would frick up a repair like that. I don't know a whole lot about it but I could tell you you at least need to sand that paint down to get the loose paint off and give something for the new paint to stick to. A coat of adhesion promoter before new paint wouldn't hurt either.

Yep, like I said he was pissed about that more than anything. Doesn't take a detective to see that they took a big shortcut. I talked to him today, and he's pretty much decided to take the new boat and cross his fingers. Attorney gets 1/4th of any cash settlement, so that's kinda like pissing in the wind.
Posted on 8/22/12 at 1:55 pm to TheDrunkenTigah
Me personally would not have gotten an attorney involved unless the dealership just refused to talk to your buddy about it and refused to fix it.

Involved is a stretch. I should have mentioned, his wife works at a law firm. He was just told what his options were pro bono, he hasn't taken any kind of legal action yet and from the looks of it doesn't plan to.
