Does this apply to newly logged woods? Loggers will be starting on mine around the start of hunting season. Is it a hunting hot spot or don't even bother?
Well, tough question. First, deer don't mind loggers so much. They're used to em. Talk to the loggers and they will tell you. Second, deer are creatures of habit. They will walk right down the middle of a damn clear cut and act like they are covered up.

Depends on location I've hunted two the past couple years but they were funnels and I saw lots of deer. Rarely set there that I didn't see something. I also killed two very nice bucks.

Definitely hunt the edges about 25 yards inside standing timber if you have any. Deer will tear that area up, especially if you can find a trail they are using to get from bedding to the clearcut to feed at night. The bucks will stage up just inside the woods before dark and wait until dark to go out into the open clearcut. Like someone else said, the rut is your best bet. A year from now, you can hunt directly over the clear cut with better results.

I would have said no before last season. We had 3 really nice deer taken from the same stand over a brand new cutover.

Make sure you go in after they replant and "quietly" pull up a few trees to create a hunting lane for later.

Thats funny, good idea, prob wont do it though. The cutover has a small drain with oaks along it, as it splits it up. Only a small riparian though.

Went ahead and got the 45 acre lease friday. Went out this afternoon and saw 3 does and 3 yearlings, separately. So not a bad start

Agree with razorback it is like they don't realize the cover is gone. They are creatures of habit and if a big buck was there he will still be there but hanging on the edges the younger ones right out in he middle. Great place for a little food plot or feeder

Sunday evening. brother killed a 15.5 inside spread 8 point today he went back and killed a gorgeous 14 inside. really symmetrical and longer tines. i'd say a new cutover works just fine. PS, they're rutting.

If you think it's good for deer try it when turkey season opens, some of the best hunting around is in a first year cutover for turkeys.

It will be good for three to five years. Most of big deer at my camp are killed off an area that was cleared about four years ago and food plots along e edge. It is if they deer don't realize the trees are gone. They continue to travel along the old trails just lie salmon return to the same streams even if they are damned. If it was good before it will be better know as you will see them until you get deer that never used those trails . Don't think just hunt it put your stand along the new tree line by the trails
