Crackpot Theory time. Euron Greyjoy gave the Faceless Men a dragon's egg in order for them to kill his brother. The Faceless Men are currently sending Jaqen to Oldtown to find out how to hatch the dragon's egg since they know it's possible because of Dany. Arya will find the egg, know what the Faceless Men plan to use it for, and steals it. She will smuggle the egg back to Westeros, find Jon, and they'll hatch it proving Jon's legitimacy.

Reading the first book again and I think it's safe to say whoever is behind the faceless men in Westeros is independently financially wealthy, and I mean super rich.

According to Littlefinger, their services cost at least twice as much as an entire sellsword army.

So, who could it be?

The Iron Bank of Braavos is my first guess. Illyrio and/or Varys would be my second. The Lannisters have the money but seem unlikely to hire foreign solutions.

I like the idea of Euron paying with a dragon egg for Balon's assassination but someone else is behind their presence in Oldtown.

On another note, why was Littlefinger so adamant about not using the Faceless Men on the assassination of Daenerys?

Because we all know it wasn't really because they were too expensive.

Perhaps Littlefinger was aware of a close relationship between the Iron Bank and the Faceless Men.

A costly assassination order on a 14 year old girl half a world away may have raised alarms with the Iron Bank who was already owed a great deal from the crown.

In the interest of self preservation, Littlefinger persuaded the King not to use the Faceless Men and instead only granted a title to Daenerys' assassin

That's definitely plausible considering how Littlefinger made money appear at the drop of a hat and the financial state of the crown is terrible.

One thing that strikes me odd upon rewatch of season three is the conversation between old lady Tyrell and Tywin is the number of times Lady Tyrell asks him if he had homosexual encounters. Maybe an indication all Lannisters are really Targs. Also noone has mentioned yet that Brandon is AA per Jojon Reed in the show. I believe Jojo said Bran is the only person that can stop the white walkers.

I can't think of any other reason they would be there. This isn't a normal assassination for them, it's an infiltration. In order for the Faceless Men to do that, it has to be incredibly important.

To manipulate Ned, and he didn't give a damn about Dany.

And, in addition to that, I think we discussed in this thread that LF is trying to play his cards right with Dany whenever she invades Westeros.

This is why I'm so confused about about them killing Pate it seems unusual for them to kill outside of their specific target/contract and the faces they typically use are of those who go to the House of Black and White to die. Unless they were specifically paid to do so, I don't see why they would kill him to infiltrate the Citadel other than a personal agenda at this point. From my very limited understanding of the FM and their operations they consider each life precious (I don't if precious is the right word...) and the taking of one is extremely costly in terms of having to pay a significant amount of money or some possession or even a person (like their child) that has a high personal value to the client. I'm beginning to wonder if Jaqen is a rogue FM at this point or if he's still actually working for their guild. If this is for a contract I can't imagine the price being anything less than outrageously expensive for them to set aside their common practice and kill anyone that can help them reach the clients final goal, and I don't know who would have that type of $ to put forth short of the Iron Bank and Euron if he really gave up a dragon egg, but I would've assumed that only covered the cost of killing a king (Balon).

Just re-read the House of the Undying chapter in CoK with a friend who has never read it before.

Even on the re-read, it's still so damn overwhelming.

Outside of all the obvious things we've discussed with the dragon having three heads and yadda yadda, have we discussed Sir Willem's fate? Obviously we put together that it's Sir Willem Darry she sees (who rescued her and Viserys from KL). And that he "fell ill". I wonder if he legitimately fell ill or if he was poisoned?

Does the hypocrisy of the House of Black and White bother anyone else? They use their religion to justify profiting off of murder. They act like the are the grim reaper but they no different then a common assassin.

bunch of bs if you ask me.

The HotU in CoK was one of my favorite chapters I've read (currently reading AFFC). A lot of symbolism and prophecies put in that chapter, yet the show writers made the scene in season 2 so crappy in comparison because they are buddies with Jason Momoa and wanted to bring him back (D & D said that in some interview I saw).

He kind of put himself in that situation and he chose to charge Areo when he could've just been captured with the rest of the group.

This for sure though.

They're really dropped the ball on Rhaegar. You could argue that he's kind of the glue to the story, kind of like Ned in a way, and through three seasons, we may have had 3-4 mentions of him. fricking ridiculous.

I honestly can't remember any mentions of him other than Jorah talking about him to Dany once or twice.

Joffrey mentioned Rhaegar in the season 3 finale when he yelled at Tywin, who hid under CR, while his "father" won the real war against Prince Rhaegar.

To be honest, when I was a Hodor during seasons 1 & 2, I don't think I could've even told you/know who Rhaegar was.

The show has also done a craptacular job with The Mountain. Had a lot of promise in season 1, then they replaced him in season 2 with that meh actor at Harenhaal and didn't even mention him in season 3.

Makes me think the Oberyn/Mountain duel in season 4 is going to be severely lacking compared to the books. Unless they do some major backtracking/mentions of why Gregor is evil and why Oberyn wanted #Justice4Elia.

They need to add a scene of the Mountain taking apart some Riverlands village before we see him vs. the RV.
