I don't remember reading anything about Polygamy and the Targs.

Aegon the Conqueror had two wives. Both were his sisters and both rode dragons

Hmmm. So the crux of the storyline comes down to polygamy.

Oh GRRM....

Jon would just go from "Jon Snow" to "Jon Sand."

I think he would be Waters being that Rhaegar lives in King's Landing. Not sure on this.

A theory, that I happen to stand by, is that Rhaegar married Lyanna in order to fulfill the prophesy of the dragon with three heads. He knew Elia couldn't have any more children and knew he had to have three. So if he did marry Lyanna, Targaryen's did shite like this often in the old days, Jon would be next in line. True born son of Rhaegar.

Jon Snow to Jon Targaryen or Jon Waters (maybe). Sand is the name given to Dornish bastards.

Oops. I was mixing up Elia and Rhaegar. You're right.

Daenerys still is next in line to the throne, as well as Aegon (if he is actually Rhaegar's child). Jon doesn't really fit into the line anywhere.
if Rhaegar married Lyanna, then Jon is the oldest son of Rhaegar making him the heir.

I don't see how it would make Jon a Sand or w/e. Bastards take the name of wherever they grow up. Edric Storm vs Maya Stone...both bastards of Robert but with different names

Mya wasn't recognized by Robert as his. Mya would be a Stone if Robert didn't know about her or was hiding her. She may have been a Storm if Robert claimed her. We don't know.

Edric would be a Storm either way since Robert is Baratheon and Edric grew up in the stormlands

I understand this now. I didn't know that the Targs practiced Polygamy. It makes sense now.

I screwed this up as well. Jesus I just confused the entire thread with my illiteracy.

no. i think it's because he was never sure if he was a bastard or not. his mom died at an early age. if we knew he would've been called Waters or Storm, it would answer how the bastards away from their homelands are named (Jon)

Then what about Brynden Rivers? Sheira Seastar? They were never called Waters for the Crownlands.

eta: I don't think there's a definitive answer on how they take their bastard name...it could be where they grow up, after their father, or after their mother.

true. that answers it. Gendry would be a Waters, not a Storm

I just don't see any purpose for it other than a cool little twist that doesn't really mean much in the end. Hell, we already know that he doesn't have the blood of the dragon (being he burned his hand very bad).

Dany burned her hand at the end of adwd when she pulled out the spear in Drogon's back.

Yeah I recalled that, but the book didn't make it seem all that bad. Whereas Jon's hand was permanently scarred.
