The Beach Boys - March 14, 1964

quote:

Clocking in at a mere 22 minutes, this long-lost concert video goes by much too quickly, but fans of the Beach Boys will be delighted with the quality of the digitally mastered picture and sound, making this a worthwhile addition to any Beach Boys collection. The boys were taped live on March 14, 1964 as part of a concert that also included the Beatles and Lesley Gore. After the performances were aired on closed-circuit TV to theaters packed with screaming fans, the Beach Boys segment remained virtually unseen until it was rediscovered in 1998.

Cutaway shots provide a wonderful glimpse of what teen audiences were like during the heyday of the surfin' craze (plenty of Gidget hairdos, and a few parents in the crowd, marveling at the frenzy of it all), but it's the music that counts here, and clearly the boys were having a pretty good day. Most of the early hits are played here ("Fun, Fun, Fun," "Little Deuce Coupe," "In My Room"), and while lead vocalist Mike Love hams it up, it's fascinating to witness early indications that bandleader Brian Wilson was growing tired of live performance. He revs it up for a wacky cover of "Papa Oom Mow-Mow," though, and that makes this video a time-capsule treasure, showing the Beach Boys in their prime before Wilson retreated completely into the sanctuary of the studio.

2. Long Tall Texan
3. Little Deuce Coupe
4. Surfer Girl
5. Monster Mash
6. Surfin' USA
7. Shut Down
8. In My Room

10. Hawaii

Here's one I enjoyed the other day...

Buddy Rich - Holland '78

quote:

Buddy Rich features the relentless power and unparalleled artistry of the man who was known as "The World's Greatest Drummer." This 75-minute concert, taped in Holland in 1978, showcases one of the tightest big bands in history, featuring acclaimed saxophonist Steve Marcus and other members of Buddy's "Killer Force," the group he would later call "the best band I ever had." Standout performances include "Grand Concourse," "Big Swing Face," and "Channel One Suite," which features Buddy's jaw-dropping drum solo.

2.Best Coast
3.Grand Concourse
4.'Round Midnight
5.Birdland
6.Channel One Suite
7.Big Swing Face

Buddy Rich rant

quote:

Rich's temper, mercurial attitude and imposing personality are documented in secret recordings that pianist Lee Musiker made during some of his tantrums on tour buses and backstage in the early 1980s.[18] These recordings, long circulated in bootleg form, have done much to fuel the reputation of Rich's personality.

You guys are gonna be back in New York on the bread line so fast you won’t even know that you were on this frickin’ band. How dare you play a frickin’ set like that. Since when did the frickin’ trumpet players become the leader of this frickin’ band and decide how long they’re gonna hold a chord? What the frick do you think you’re doin’? You think you’re playin’ with some kid up there? I expect one-hundred-and-ten percent fricking perfection every frickin’ tune, you got that? If you can’t do it, get off my frickin’ band to-NIGHT! You had a day off yesterday and you come back like this and you suck! What the frick kind of music do you think you’re playing here anyhow? And who do you think you’re playing for? You think I’ll tolerate that shite? You’re worse than any frickin’ high school band I ever heard.

I don't want people to think I'm knocking Phish. I actually know very little about them.

The devotion of their fanbase is interesting though

Tom Lehrer in Copenhagen (1967)

"Tom Lehrer is the greatest satirical songwriter who ever lived" -- Dr. Demento

"If, after hearing my songs,? just one human being is inspired to say something nasty to a friend, or perhaps to strike a loved one, it will all have been worth the while." - Tom Lehrer

Graham Parker & The Rumour - Hammersmith Odeon, London (April 3, 1979)

With his unique blend of blues, R&B, Van Morrisonish soul, Dylanesque folk, and plain old kick-out-the-jams hard rock, Graham Parker was one of the greatest talents to come out of New Wave. But unlike Elvis Costello (who clearly based himself himself on Parker in some respects) he never became a star. This concert presents Parker at near the height of his powers, touring to promote his classic album Squeezing Out Sparks.

The Texas Tornados - Live at Gruene Hall (1992)

The Texas Tornados were a Tex-Mex roots music supergroup:

Freddy Fender was a cross-over success story around the world with hits like "Before the Next Teardrop Falls" and "Wasted Days and Wasted Nights".

Flaco Jiménez has played with acts ranging from the Rolling Stones to Dwight Yoakam. He also is known as the "Father of Conjunto Music" (Flaco plays the Conjunto accordion).

Augie Meyers, the virtuoso of the Vox organ, has shared the stage with the likes of The Allman Brothers Band and Bob Dylan. He's also a member of the Texas Music Hall of Fame.

The late, great Doug Sahm was the leader of the 1960s pop-rock band the Sir Douglas Quintet, with hits such as "She's About a Mover" and "Mendocino" to their credit. Meyers' signature sound on the Vox organ was a prominent feature of the band's sound. Sahm, Meyers and Jiménez are from the San Antonio area.

"You've heard of New Kids on the Block?, we're the Old Guys in the Street". -- Freddy Fender

01. Who Were You Thinking Of ? (Glaser/Gauvin/Pelletier)
02. Hey Baby (Que Paso ?) (Augie Meyers/Bill Sheffield)
