Recently moved into a new home and it sits on over a half acre. Trying to deceide on the type of mower I should get. I would like a ZTR but I don't really think I need one. Looking for suggestions on brands, types of mowers, personal experiences. Budget is 0-3000.00 I would like to land somewhere in the middle of that range if possible.

Zero turn for half a fricking acre? You should buy a machine gun to hunt flys as well.

Calm Down Francis
If I can get a deal on a good used ZTR in the 42" cut range I would jump on it. Do I think its overkill yeap I sure do...just like most everything else I have when it comes to outdoor stuff I own.

Get a used commercial walk-behind with sulky, like a Scag or something

Best thing I ever did concerning lawn equipment.
48" deck,Kawasaki commercial motor.
Sulky.
Cuts damn good and rough terrain isn't as hard on the body standing up as it is sitting.
Kinda like the difference when you're standing in a boat vs. sitting down on a rough day.

I have a 42" gravely ZTR that replaced the old faithfull Murray some years back. Would never go back to th eriding mower. Saves so much time, and the 23HP hauls arse.

really just personal preference, i used my dads gravely ZTR for around a year on my 1 acre yard, it was nice but my yard is a little to bumpy to take advantage of the speed... ive since bought a JD lawn tractor and love it... you can get a badass JD for the price of an OK ZTR... up to you my friend

Toro Time Master 30"
Big enough for half an acre but not too small where it will take forever... and it's relatively inexpensive

$1100 for something you aren't sitting on... might as well get a damn riding mower...

Home Depot has a 42" Toro Time Cutter ZTR that they sell for $2500. I can get you 25% off of it. I have read reviews on them and they are pretty good. They also have a 48" with a Kawasaki engine for $2999 (the one I'd recommend). I can get you the same deal on that one.

Plan to spend a long time on your 1/2 acre? Spend a few more bucks and get a ZTR...
I got a Dixon ZTR 42" in 1989 and have cut my 1 acre yard in the growing season every 3 - 6 weeks since then (haven't looked back).
Of course I have had to replace failed parts in this 23 year period. My estimate of the replaced parts cost is $1,000. Yes I am an engineer and mechanically minded and, as such, am able to replace these parts myself. Most replaced parts were belts and blades. No big deal, IMO...
IMO, the time saved with a ZTR is time that can not be recovered when the lawn must be cut monthly (more or less) in the growing season.
There are several ZTR brands available. Most carry both types (Lawn Tractor and ZTR). Most ZTRs are more expensive - for a reason...
You must decide. Weigh the options that most posters have presented...
