@CharlesRobinson: Penn State signing "consent decree" is NCAA-speak. What it means is that PSU was fully on board. These are basically self-imposed penalties.

I think that's kind of the idea, eh? Don't cover up for child rapists, and your school won't have to worry about it.
Amiright?
Yes, you are right. Evil thrives where "good people" fail to take a stand.

That was trying to punish Peterno and make sure he wasn't the winningest coach.
Exactly. They don't want him at the top of the record book.

I imagine a large chunk of the 60 will be coming from their share of B1G TV revenues.

60 Mill is a new building or renovations to campus. Thats a whole lotta cheddar. I am curious as to where the money has to come from. If boosters get to pay it might raise some flags with all those people the NCAA has to hire to monitor them.

Uh-oh. We all in trouble.

Sad thing is every other sport at Penn St will be affected, football is the economic engine and you could make the argument that all players in every sport should be allowed to transfer as well

Why are there so many conflicting reports on the scholly losses? I've heard 40, 60, and 80 over 4 years. Seems to me that 10 per year for 4 years is 40.

quote:Yes. I think the NCAA did the right thing here. What happened at PSU was undesirable, intolerable, and just plain WRONG. Accountability is a b!tch, but the PSU leadership, coaches, and whoever knew and said nothing have brought the house down. Plain and simple. All suffer for peoples' wrongdoings sometimes. But this is about as close to justice as we're gonna get. Think about all those little boys.
These are some damn harsh penalties.
They didn't get the DP, but it must seem to PSU they got life in prison.

This whole thing is just sad. While I think the punishment is deserved I certainly don't take any pleasure from it. I really hope this somehow will help the real victims of Sandusky to somehow start to heal, I just don't see how though.

They have a 65 scholly limit for 4 years. They essentially lose 20 per year.

I don't really like Penn State covering up years of child molestation.
quote:Meh. I don't have any problem with Penn State suffering these sanctions or anything worse. It is actually a small amount of retribution that the school deserves. However, it never really was or should have been an NCAA issue, IMO.
This "exercise of authority" is completely warranted.
PSU agreed with it and signed off on it, so there is no issue as it applies to this case. I thought I made clear in each of my posts that I was talking about the expansion of the NCAA's oversight/power and not the PSU incident specifically.

Yeah cause that will help out PSU's brand. "Hey we support pedo's, we got punished, now we don't think we should be punished."-
Baseball 'bout to blow up on PSU campus.

I can get behind that.
I Wonder what an appropriate over/under would be on FB player transfers. I say 20 and I'd take the under.

They said from 25 to 15 which refers to their initial counter limit, and that is for 4 years. I didn't hear what their total annual limit will be capped at (from 85 to..).

Don't have a problem with any of the sanctions except for vacating the wins. Got a big problem with that one, not so much for Joe Pa, moreso for the players that worked their asses off and now have nothing to show for their efforts on field.

I'd have to agree, but they obviously were making it so that Paterno wasn't the most winningest coach...but how do you do you take away his heritage and records while keeping the results of the hard-working student athletes intact?
