Its probably just a hair outside the genre, but I remember something that surprised me:
I was at sea, and the first big wave of what was to be a typhoon hit the ship broadside, and I was lucky to be close to the superstructure, and grabbed a pipe intended for the purpose, that ran the length, but some sailor immediately to my right, who was too far to get to the pipe, slid down the steep incline of the usually 0 degree bubble deck. He was really moving when he hit the rail and flipped over it. I was not for-sure he was going to stay dry, but he held on, and clambered back on deck.
That was a wake up call. We are not in Kansas anymore Toto.

Well the OJ case started off with a high speed pursuit then it all just unraveled from there. SO that was a big deal.
But Columbine was insane to me.

After the first 2 planes hit I was being really immature and not focusing on the devastation because I don't think I could come to grips with it...then the towers fell. And I was sick to my stomach.

But all the same, I was saddened when JFK was shot.
I have been used, all of my life, to the horrors and stupidities of man on man violence. My grandmother showed me photos of people hung in Poland. All of it. The whole Jewish experience of WW II. So I didnt really expect much of the Shreveport Times editors.
I had them (Shreveport Times editorial folk) pretty much in the Enforcer Drone category, dupes of the KKK and WTO wanna be's.

I remember being crowded with students in the union, standing room only, and watching the towers fall.

Saints winning NFC Championship game against Minnesota by far blew me away more than anything else.
Twin Towers attack was just as shocking but in a whole different way.

I was at work and one of our engineers from that area called us and asked if we had heard anything about a plane that flew into the twin towers. We turned on the news just as the second plane hit.
About an hour later my wife calls in a panic about the schools on lockdown. she went and got our kids from school

Tracy porter pick in the NFC championship game.
Thought for sure Brett Favre was gonna get us and we were going to lose.
When we got the pick, it just made me jump 10 feet up into the air.

The part where McQueery walks into a shower while Sandusky is raping a kid McQueery takes the bold action to do nothing in particular.
ETA: When I got in this thread I thought it was regarding the Sandusky stuff. OMFG #1 moment for me is 9/11 when the first tower collapsed.

1. 9/11, when the second plane hit.
2. Watching the footage from the helicopter over New Orleans after Katrina
The sinking suspicion that several people at Penn State may have known about Sandusky and did nothing about it is definitely up there.
I'm sure McQeery had a major WTF moment, but I can't get around his delay in notifying anyone but his own father....even more shocking is that JoPa and the president of the university may have known. Someone had to. How do you go from next in line to replace a successful coach like that and then take a sudden retirement? Someone knew.
