The last nine US Opens have been won by nine different players. The last 15 majors total have been won by 15 different players.

Do you think this represents:

1) A lack of exceptionalism compared to a few years ago (esp since Tiger, Phil, and maybe Ernie have not dominated in the majors of late)

2) A depth of truly great talent (there are more great pros today than there were even five years ago)

3) A reflection of another issue. The US Open courses for example are often ridiculously hard. You would think this would be a good thing that would result in the very best players rising to the top more often - but that is not what we've seen. Is it likely that Tiger-proofing courses and making things hellishly hard to play in general disproportionately favors lucky bounces when just a couple bad breaks can down the best players?

I personally like the parity, but ratings probably say it was better during Tiger's heyday.

A combo of the first 2

As for #3 ....the courses have been set up fairly in my opinion

I think so. A guy like Webb Simpson will win a big tournament and then he won't finish again in the top 10 for the next year; ie Charl Schwartzel and Keegan Bradley, and Darren Clarke.

Yes, it is down. Golf excels when there is a super star or a crop of them. IMO.

My answer is #2 plus Tiger's shite.

i thought the US Open was awesome yesterday. that is all.

i wished ol Jim wouldn't have choked tho. 16-17-18 killed him(yesterday) and Tiger(Saturday).

Same for the 17 year old AM Bo, but he's a fatass and likely didn't have the stamina for 72 holes.

It's #2 but I think there's a distinction to be made. For the general public/"casual golf fans" they need a run like Tiger had in the 2000's, a superstar that is bigger than the sport. This is obvious by the ratings in that Tiger "pushes the needle" ratings wise more than all other golfers combined.

For "serious golf fans" the parity is a great thing. There's a ton of drama and great story lines that come out of a deep field of talent all having runs at these tournaments.

The "out of nowhere" type winner is fun when it's a novelty, but when its gotten to this point it gets a bit boring.

I'd much rather there be 10 guys who have a real chance to win every major than the current whole field. It'd be much more interesting.

It's got to be bad for the ratings since there is no continuity for the casual fan who will probably only watch weekend coverage of the majors every year.

I wish it were somewhere in the middle.

I don't need a Tiger, but I don't find what we've had lately that great either. The game needs some of these guys to become the 3-4 time major winners.

I'll try to address the multiple questions separately:

Do you think this represents:

I think this is a combination of 2 & 3.

I think golf is "down" to casual fans in a big way lately, mainly because of Tiger being down. I don't think you necessarily have to have Tiger play well to have casual fan's interest up, but with out him, you need a few exceptional players/personalities to capture interest.

Somewhat related to that, I would love if they would convert the PGA Championship to the traditional format from before '56 and include some match play aspect. Perhaps play stroke play for 36 holes then seed players and match play the rest. It is the one major that has no true identity in my opinion.

He has had two other top five finishes this year.
Another was = 10.

He was also #2 on the money list last year.

Golf is only down if you are a Tiger fan, like cowherd this morning. He said he changed away from golf because Tiger wasn't in it.

He missed a really good finish.

I love seeing these younger players and other names that I didn't know all that well.

I think it's more of a "changing of the guard".
You have alot of new talent making headway as the new great players.
Dufner, Rory, Bubba, Webb, and others are going to be the next generation and it's going to be great to watch.

Noonan is right about the game not being down in terms of level of play, but I think the OP was talking about its position in the world of sports. Alot of people tuned in to see Tiger's greatness. Golf was secondary to them.
