The subject of doing this as a sideline (pun intended) job came up recently and I was wondering what to expect if I wanted to do this part time.

I've got an acquaintance who is the president of one of the Football Officials Associations and brought it up to him, but couldn't really take notes about what he said cause I was driving. I do plan on calling him back, but thought I check w/ the OT.

Goodness, I hope referees avoid fan sites.

I am a referee for MHSAA. What exactly are you asking? We only get $100/game + expenses, with the head ref getting $250. The top crews get more playoff games which are $250 and $500 per game. It's ok money, but I just enjoy doing it.

There's another guy on here that refs LHSAA. He defended the abomination of the 2010 WM/Barbe game where WM had 29 penalties to Barbe's 5. It was so bad Rivals wrote an article about it, but it was all on the up and up per him.

That should get him to post for you.

I'm not sure how much light you can shed on this subject given you're in MS and I'm in LA, but specifically I was inquiring about the process/difficulty of becoming a ref, the "rigors" of travel/time dedicated to the job, the money and the possibilities of reaching college or pros.

Do you know how the money in MS relates to LA? I'm not necessarily looking to make it a career and hope it's something I can say I enjoy doing just to do it, but I'd certainly entertain the idea of advancing as far as possible.

MHSAA has a website that tells you what you will make and how to become a ref. I ref soccer and I make about 90 bucks a night. I really don't like soccer, but it keeps me in shape and the money is decent for 3 hours of work.

Louisiana doesn't pay refs enough, and fans need to remember they get what they pay for IMO

it's sad that we raised their pay about two years ago and we're still 49th in the nation IIRC

I did this for a few years during grad school. It wasn't worth the money for the time required to start earning money each season and travel to and from games. It also got pretty old dealing with idiot parents that thought they knew the rules and/or thought they has a better view of who last touched the ball from 60 feet away when I was 6 feet away.

That's not to mention the idiot coaches. I had to toss a coach from a large boys school in the first game he ever coached (in a summer clinic tournament) for the team. One of his best players got undercut on a layup and got up and punched the guy out, so I had to toss them both. The coach came on the floor screaming "this is bullshite", etc. so I T'd him up, then as I was reporting the fouls at the scorer's table he screamed GFY loud enough for the whole gym to hear it when I reported his. So then I tossed him, but he refused to leave the gym. The tournament organizer (a head coach for the unicersity) had to come out and ask him to leave the gym, which he refused.

Long story short, I ended up spending several unpaid hours in meetings with the head of our association and an LHSAA official over it, including watching film, etc. They ended up recommending a suspension for the coach (didn't happen since it wasnt an LHSAA sanctioned game) and commending me for handling it by the book and keeping my cool and also putting myself in harms way by getting between the players to split up the fight, but it still wasn't worth the headache just for 50 bucks for the game and giving up my entire Saturday and then some.

I know, tl;dr but it definitely wasn't worth the time for me.

I enjoy it and the process is simple. A few seminars in the summer is all you do. You must join the staff/crew of a head ref who will take you on, but if you can find one locally, it's really not bad. I really enjoy it.
